RHA members have been awarded School of the Year by the South West Affiliate of College and University Residence Halls (SWACURH) at the University of Houston. "1 think it shows how hard every one in RHA is working and that we are making a difference on campus,” said Becky Howard. RHA national communications coordinator. Howard headed the team that wrote the bid for the award. Josh Kaylor. RHA director of financial de velopment and a freshman computer science major, presented the bid. Kaylor said SWACURH judged the schools by attendance at gener al assemblies, programs, student participation and a general evalua tion of the the accomplishments cit ed in the bid. Kaylor added that most of the questions posed to him during the r presentation were about RHA’s ex ceptionally high budget. “We have the largest budget in the nation, and that’s all raised through RHA. They spent a lot of time asking about how we do that,” Kaylor said. “We have a budget of $10,000 this year, and we plan to increase that to $28,000 next year.” In May, RHA will compete against eight schools for the title of national School of the Year. The award will be announced during the RHA’s general assembly Wednesday. RHA will also be discussing the proposition for a new residence hall, adding community kitchens to resi dence halls and possible changes in Welcome Week — a week of activities to help students adjust to college life. Tara Gray. RHA vice president of programs, said RHA is considering changing Welcome Week so that freshmen have more time to accli mate to college life. “There has been an overall feel ing from the hall councils that they do not like the shortened week with the freshmen,” Gray said. "They get very little orientation time before classes start.” Gray said RHA also will be dis cussing the possibilities of bringing community kitchens to the halls. RHA will address the role kitchens play in drawing students to off-cam pus living and how a community kitchen might improve retention of students in the residence halls. Train hopping PATRIC SCHNEIDER Tut B," Cory Collins, a freshman business major, crosses over a traintte! stopped between west and main campus Tuesday. The lecture is free, though there will be no late admittance.
