SOUTH TEXAS COLLEGE OF LAW SPORTS Page 6 THE BATTALION Monday, March6,5( Aggies swept by fifth-ranked Bears BY DOUG SHILLING The Battalion Monday, March 6, Entering this weekend’s series against the fifth-ranked Baylor Uni versity Bears, the Texas A&M base ball team knew it was up against steep er competition than it has been facing. The Aggies did not know how steep the competition was, however. The Bears defeated A&M 6-4 Sun day to complete the three-game sweep of the Aggies. It was the first sweep in a confer ence series of the Aggies since 1996 against Rice University, when A&M was still in the Southwest Conference. For Baylor, it was their first sweep of A&M since 1991. “It was a tough weekend,” A&M baseball coach Mark Johnson said. “When you get swept it’s always tough. We haven’t been swept very of ten. You certainly have to give Baylor credit. I thought they played very well. “We made some errors and didn’t hit in key situations. I thought their hits were legitimate in most cases. They went the other way when they had to and certainly they pitched well.” As it had in the rest of the series, Baylor jumped on the Aggies first in Sunday’s game. Baylor designated hitter Ross Ben nett stroked a two-run single in the bottom of the second inning to give the Bears a 2-0 lead. A&M had an answer though, as sophomore shortstop Ryan Wardinsky I* launched a three-run home run over GUY ROGERS/Thk Btlis i A&M sophomore Ryan Wardinsky applies the tag to Baylor University shortstop Jace Brewer during Friday night’s game at Olsen Field. Baylor swept the Aggies for the first time since the 1991 season. the left center field wall to give the Aggies a 3-2 lead, its first of the series. The lead was short-lived however as Baylor came back with one run in the bottom of the fifth to tie the score up at three. A&M had a golden opportunity to break the game open in the sixth in ning when junior right fielder Daylan Holt led off w ith a double and sopho more left fielder Carlos Sepulveda fol lowed with a single to give A&M run ners on the comers with no one out. A&M did not capitalize however, as they left the runners stranded. With the momentum in their comer, Baylor seized the moment in the bot tom of the sixth as Bennett once again had a two-run single to put the Bears up 5-3 and give them the lead for good. Wardinsky said the Aggies lems were due to the lack of perfom ing in clutch situations. “We didn’t play good baseball the critical situations,” Wardinst said. “You have to give Baylorcrd because they came out and madepk) in the big parts of the game. We 14 out of the top thr the momentum, then they got itba|Iowa State Unis on their side.” Heciel Ho filte Inland Vox-* Spring Bredis •GalvestJon Island- March 10-19, 2000 Looking forward to getting away with the family or friends — to bask in the spring weather while school is out on break!
