Mock trial in need of money BY BRANDIE LIFFICK The Battalion After countless hours of study and preparation, Mandy Coker, a junior po litical science major, needs more than a court appeal to present her case be fore a judge — she needs $3,000. Coker and other members of Texas A&M’s mock trial team are attempting to raise the amount to attend a nation al competition. For the past 10 years, the Texas A&M mock trial team has attended an open invitational tournament at the University of Texas. This year, the group was able to raise enough money to join the Mock Trial Association, a national organization. As a member, the team was invited to participate in a regional competition in Birmingham, Ala. on Feb. 4. But as the tournament date approached, the team realized that they could not raise enough money to attend. “We called and canceled. But then the president of the mock trial associ ation called and asked why we weren’t coming. He said it would be a shame if the Aggies couldn’t make it out,” Coker said. “So he sponsored us so that we could fly out there.” The team placed fifth overall at the regional competition and is advancing to nationals. "The top five teams get to go to na tionals, so we just barely made it!” Coker said. The A&M team is now trying to raise $3,000, the estimated cost to trav el to Minnesota. “We received $1,600 from the stu dent activities fund — which is great — but we are still short,” Coker said. “We are going to send letters out to lo cal attorneys and other businesses that might be able to sponsor us.” The mock trial team is offering to put sponsoring business logos on their T-shirts as a way of advertising. “Being able to advance this far is not only great for us, but for A&M,” said Ben Hines, team member and a sophomore psychology major. “We are letting everyone know that A&M is interested in law, even though we’ve never really been thought of like that before.” The teams are given a court case in mid-October to begin preparing for the regional tournament. Those that ad vance take the same ease to nationals. “It’s great to get to these invitation- als and see how other teams handle the cases and things. It helps us to prepare better for next year,” Hines said. The mock trial team is a division of Legal Education Group for Aggie Law Students (LEGALS), but is open for anyone to participate. “Being in mock trial team gives me the insight into how the courtroom works,” said Christine Adamson, team member and a sophomore accounting major. “I’m thinking about going into law, and this is a really great way for me to get involved, meet people and see if this is what I want to do.” “Not only is mock trial good for those who are interested in law, but it’s great for anyone who is quick thinking on their feet,” said Emily Puder, LEGALS member and a junior English and Spanish major. “Overall, it’s just a lot of fun.” Song sung Green” Campus Ministry International: We will have guest speaker Joe Busey, a renowned artist, seminary grad uate, and minister extraordi naire at 8:30 p.m. in MSC 205.
