Tension between conservative and moderate church members has been growing. Many conservatives believe the convention have adopted policies too different from the national organi zation, the 15.7 million-member Southern Baptist Convention. For example, conservatives claim the Baptist General Conven tion of Texas has not taken strong- enough stands against abortion and homosexuality. Jack Graham, pastor of Preston- wood Baptist Church in Plano, told the Southern Baptist Convention's Baptist Press that more than 40 percent of the churches in the Baptist General Con vention of Texas are unhappy w ith its International shadows M. Aristo Setiawan and Retno Sulistijo perform a traditional puppet show for four-year-old Nicolas Moreno during International Week at the MSC on Tuesday. It is up to you to go and talk to them, go and ask them questions, then they will start to so cialize and come over to your house. The point is that they are scared to come up [to you). It is up to you. Simpson: There is a definite lack of minority in facul ty on campus. We don't have enough minority faculty on campus, there is no way. They were saying that we should voice our problems to the administration. Maybe if there were more people in the administration aspects, then they could help out the people that are having problems on this campus. I am a [resident adviser]; I hear about a lot of racists things that happen in the dorms, and a lot of the mi nority students don’t want to make it a big deal and they don’t tell anybody. Or if they do tell their RA, the hall di rector might not take the correct steps in solving that prob lem. 1 have had numerous people come to me and say ‘My roommate said she does not want a black roommate and she moved.’ My sophomore year, being an RA, 1 saw my roommate one time and when I came back she had moved out. I was like ‘What happened?’ But I never saw her again. Incidents like that need minorities in positions to solve problems like that. Yeah, so if we had more minori ty faculty, more of our issues and problems would be solved. The administration needs to take some steps into getting more of them here because they are not doing that. They say it is 1.5 [percent African-American), but it is falling down each year. Ballare: I just want to say about the discrimination part, does anyone have any problems with discrimination? Be cause I know just one time I had a problem with the post office and 1 felt I was discriminated against. It was my time to go, but then they told me to get in the back of the line, and they let all of the rest of the people go. Might: So what did you do? Ballare: As soon as it happened I went straight to Dr. Southerland and he handled it right there. I got a free mail box for a year and everything. Might: What about that employee at the post office? Ballare: He is still there. He owns the post office. James: (She begins to cry) When I got back to my car [freshman year] somebody wrote “typical nigger.” This is the reason I have hard feelings at Texas A&M University, because someone did this to me. Okay, so all of this stuff about, there are too many unspoken instances that happen at this University that shape the mind of the young people here, and you wonder why people leave and why they would rather go to some other school. This is not the first time you have Asian students getting beat up because of their skin color and 1 just feel that the majority, the white “What is it? Is it my skin color that intimidates you?... It is ridiculous and it is stupid." — Suzette Figaro president of Texas A&M chapter of NAACP people, sit back and complain. They don’t realize how it is to be a black person on this campus, and not just being black, but just being a minority. Even ifyou arejiot a Chris tian, Asian or whatever, they just don’t understand. And they are quick to sit up there and say that you are just com plaining too much and that this really doesn’t happen, and it does happen. Might: We wanted to hear a little about personal expe riences of racism here at A&M? Maybe you don’t have a personal experience with racism — then we want to hear that too. Maybe your experience here has been comfort able — that is ol'note, too. Figaro: Personally, I have plenty of stories. I am sick and tired of white people coming up to Greeks and saying why don’t you do that stepping thing that you do so well, when all nine of us have a great history, and we have so much to ofter, we just don't step. When I was in San An tonio, I remember there were five buses, it was with South- BY V If Texas i em Greek Leadership Conference. It was for all Greek When we were going to the bus, minorities hangtoeei er. There were like two \sians. one Ilispanicandthere i where black, and we were going to our bus, andallfti white people and there were like 50 of them and they utn trying to squish onto one bus, and we were like ‘Youca come sit with us and chill w ith us' mid I knew halfotik were from A&M, and we were like ‘Come sit with im ride back to the hotel', and when they realized that th!) basketball t had to sit with us, I saw some ugly faces. I was like'Win 'Melvin Wa about us do you not like?’At the Rec Center they are sir could pick onl posed to play radio stations for 30 minutes. And theyri week for the A only play 103.1 for about 15 minutes. I heard this on T he at peak guy say, ‘Why don’t they turn this nigger music off... is ridiculous that w e have to deal with this on aconstil seas on, it v basis, and that people are afraid of us for no reason. \\\ have to be nov is it? I feel like that i f you have self confident then you will not care what other people think about yo when you go into a classroom, you should not won about whether that person is going to get up and moi because I know that 1 do that if someone smells! smoke I can't stand the smell of smoke, I am goingi get up and move. 1 have never noticed if someone li gotten up and moved, again I know that white peop talk to you in class and they try to befriend me alii time, but I am saying that you have to have selfconf deuce. That is what my mom taught me. ‘Theyareit better than you, Adrienne, you do not hold yourk) down. You hold your head up high, because you are) the same level as them’ and that is the type ofmenti you have to have.
