Larete Patrocinio Orpinelli, 47, a drifter with a long history of violent be havior, confessed to three murders shortly after he was arrested on Jan. 14 in Rio Claro, police chief Sueli Isler Batelochi said. In subsequent days, he confessed to seven more killings and led police to the bodies. Police said the victims, both boys and girls, ranged in age from five to 11. It was unclear exactly when each victim was killed. “He said nightmares he was hav ing made him to confess to the crimes,” Batelochi said by tele phone from Rio Claro, 250 miles west of Rio de Janeiro. Orpinelli, who earned a modest living greasing the runners of the steel doors on bars and restau rants, had been committed to psy chiatric hospitals five times be tween 1967 and 1993. He said he was driven to kill the children after he was unable to perform sexually. Ecuador (AP) — Ecuador’s new president declared Tuesday that his government is not under the sway of military officers who toppled his predecessor and put him in charge of this troubled Andean nation. Gustavo Noboa, who was Ecuador's vice president until Presi dent Jamil Mahuad was removed last week, said on television Tuesday that he was not beholden to the military generals who put him in power. “Absolutely not,” he said. “I am here because I am fulfilling a duty that I will carry out well."
