State District Judge Everett Young found psychiatric reports indicate Robison, 42, understands he is to be executed for a rampage in which five people were killed 17 years ago near Fort Worth. And Robison’s statement to the court yesterday further convinced him. Young said. Robison, shackled at his wrists and ankles, took the stand during the brief hearing to apologize to the victims’ friends and family “if the recent media coverage caused [them] any pain and suffering.” He added that he had been “ready to go peacefully” Aug. 17 — his previously scheduled execution date — before the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals blocked the lethal injection and agreed with Ro bison’s attorneys that .their claims of the inmate’s mental problems deserved a look. “The competency hearing wasn’t my idea,” Robison, who had been diagnosed as a paranoid schizo phrenic, said. But “there are people out there who love me as well, and they want me to live.” Lois Robison has led the fight for years to have her son spared and treated for mental illness. NEWS IN BRIEF U.S. Army grounds Apache helicopters WASHINGTON (AP) — The Army said yesterday it will inspect all 743 of its Apache attack helicopters and temporarily ground those found to have a type of tail rotor bearing that is believed to have caused an Apache crash early this year. The bearings will be replaced and the Apaches will be returned to duty, Army spokesperson Jim Stueve said. No Apaches will fly until the in spections are completed this week, Stueve said. The Apache, made by Boeing, is the Army’s best attack helicopter and is deployed both in the United States and abroad. The decision to inspect the fleet was made when the Army deter mined the bearing was the cause of a crash last January at Fort Rucker, Ala., in which the helicopter was de stroyed and the two-man crew suf fered minor injuries, Stueve said. ie Battalion The Texas A&r» Team is one o' teams at A&M The Aggies hav the nine shows oated in this s< three shows N< Yeeman Arens FOR A LONG, HEALTHY CLOTHING CAREER START WITH A SOLID OUTFIT.
