The 22-year-old is charged with first-degree murder, aggravated robbery and kidnapping in the Oct. 7, 1998, beating. McKinney faces the death penalty if convicted. They said the pair drove Shepard to a remote area east of Laramie, tied him to the fence, robbed him of $20 and beat him into a coma.
