Kappa Al pha Psi, has been promoting its sixth annual comedian show, the Kappa Komedy Jam, through what it has titled "Kap pa Week.” The seven-day programming and publicity campaign, capped off by a comedy show, is intended to enhance African-Ameri can cultural awareness on campus. Julian Blevins, Kappa social chair and a se nior civil engineering major, said the fraterni ty hopes to facilitate a more open-minded campus environment. “We set up a series of programs through out the week to enhance knowledge on cam pus and set a different atmosphere for stu dents,” he said. “The theme for this year’s Kappa Week is ‘A New Life.’” The "New Life” week of pro grams included a lecture, “Fear of the Black Man,” in which a speaker talked of his experience of being wrongly accused of a crime. Wednes day’s program discussed the possi bility of Armageddon. Curtis Pete, Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity president anti senior computer engineering major, said the Kappas are trying to give back to the campus a little bit of what they’ve been given. “Kappa Week is a chance to give hack to the students by pro viding programs and activities that are more laid back but are also educating at the same time,” Pete said. “The reason we chose to make this year’s theme ‘A New Life’ is be cause we’re focusing on a new out look on life and ttying to get peo ple thinking about things they may have never thought about before; things that you’ve done, that you’re doing and how they affect you.” Pete said the Kappas encourage everyone to participate in Kappa Week programs. “The programs are open to any one,” Pete said. “1 personally looked forward to getting people ■ to come oilt to the show and pro grams — It’s been a nice break away from normal activities. We hope that through our programs people be come aware of issues we're facing today and what we can do about them.” The headlining show, the Kappa Komedy Jam, will feature several popular comedians. “The show is one of pretty good caliber,” he said. “We’re featuring AJ Johnson, who was in movies like Friday, How To Be a Play er and 1 Got The Hook-Ups by Master P. It’s good for us to he able to get such a celebrity because we’re hoping it’ll bring more people out to the show. ” The show also will include two tentative up and coming comedians and an African-Amer ican dance promotion by the campus dance, troupe. Fade To Black. “We have a really good show this year,” Pete said. “The minor comedians are from the Black Entertainment Television tour. We’ve also got Fade To Black dancing again. and they do a good job of getting the cron; excited.” Virginia Smith, Fade To Black historianan; a senior biology major, said the dancegrocp looks forward to enhancing awarenessof# ferent types of African-American dance. “Fade to Black is a wonderful student-m: nonprofit organization, whose purposeisu heighten awareness of historical and African American dance,” Smith said "We dance everything up to modern, tap, lyrical [and] hip-hop. The K|ppas usuallyai us to do a hip-hop dance to get the peopleei- cited, hut we’ve done a swing dance andnoi elties. which are dances that tell a story. Our' purpose at the Komedy Jam is to basicailygg the crowd hyped.” LaTarah Lacey. Fade To Black president ami a senior journalism major, said she enjoys hanging out with the Komedy Jam comedian; "We get to talk to the c:- medians backstage and» what they're like betoie they go on, and that’s real cool because they're all real laid hack."
