The privately owned company also wants to open more retail stores — a move that will relax the grip department stores Klein's corporate designs Calvin Klein Inc. is considering other business alternatives, including a possible merger. FRANKFORT, Ky. (AP) — The word “evolution” has quietly been deleted from Kentucky’s guidelines for what students should be taught, two months after Kansas created a furor when it dropped Darwin’s the ory as a required part of the cur riculum. The Kentucky Education Depart ment edited out “evolution” and re placed it with the phrase “change over time. ” Deputy Education Commissioner Gene Wilhoit said the word was con sidered “a lightning rod that creates a diversion from what we’re teaching.” Some teachers, already nervous about what they consider an assault on a cornerstone of biology from those who favor the biblical account of creation, were annoyed. “They chose the less scientifical ly correct term and went with a more politically feasible term,” Ken Rosen baum, director of the Kentucky Sci ence Teachers Association, said yes terday. “In science we have big words like photosynthesis. Do we not call it pho tosynthesis? Do we call it plant food making?” Helen Mountjoy, chairperson of the Kentucky Board of Education, said the change would make no difference in the classroom. "We teach evolution and we test evolution in Kentucky. ,, — Helen Mountjoy Kentucky Board of Education chair “We teach evolution and we test evolution in Kentucky,” she said. “There is no change in the way we expect teachers to approach this subject.” In August, the Kansas Board of Ed ucation adopted new testing stan dards that play down the scientific im portance of evolution, including the theory that humans descended from apes and other lower species. In many states, including Ken tucky, there are periodic attempts at local levels to push “creation ism” as a biblical counterbalance to evolution. In 1996, officials in the Marshall County school district in western Ken tucky confiscated science textbooks and glued together two pages dealing with the big-bang theory. Some principals had complained that the fifth- and sixth-grade text books did not include the biblical ac count of creation. When the Kentucky science guide lines were first provided to teachers in 1995, they did not include the word “evolution” in the statement: “Bio logical change over time accounts for the diversity of species developed through gradual processes over many generations. ” Last year, science teachers suc cessfully campaigned to substitute “evolution” for “change over time.” xactly aghib smail sue- ason. netbacks a an Irvin an to slop Smi! team-higfil best averagi ’eption iwo of lsma:| ed into ton more have| ses are single cov burned by Starting Rentals for Private Parties on the 16th Call for DRINK SPECIALS and additional information :RV MUCH ALIVE!! 201 W. 26th Street Downtown Bryan Wednesday Enchilada Special $4.99 Draft Beer 99<t mug $ 1.99 Goblets Open till 11 p.m. Thursday, Friday & Saturday 1912 S.
