Not only were the Aggies one of the best teams in the nation at getting their players home, but with last year being a record setting one at the College World Series for home runs and runs scored, the path to home seemed easier than ever. But a funny thing happened to the Aggies between College Station and Omaha. Some how, they forgot how to get home. For a team that was ranked No. 1 for part of the season and tabbed by some as the team to beat in Om aha, this was a huge factor to forget, but leave it to a bunch of guys to refuse to stop and ask for directions. But maybe the Aggies did not forget how to get home after all, but instead the players de cided to return back to the days of high school when it was cool to break curfew, not come home and then blame it on your friends. Only in the case of the Aggie players, it really was their friends’ fault they stayed out too late. Against FSU, Daylon Holt, John Scheschuck and Steven Truitt were all ready to come home, but their good pals Sean Heaney, Greg Porter and Dell Lindsey left them high and dry without a ride. And when Chad Hudson stiffed his friends on a ride home against Cal-State Fullerton, which would have been the tying runs, it was, as Florida State coach Mike Martin said, “0-and- 2 and barbecue for the Aggies. ” In the end, though, it does not matter what the reason was the Aggies could not get its men home. The cruel and ironic truth about the situation is that for its inability to find home in Omaha, the Aggies get a trip to — that’s right — home. Doug Shilling is a junior journalism major. BY REECE FLOOD The Battalion Texas A&M soccer coach G. Guer- rieri is already off to a strong start to the 1999 fall season with the recruit ment of another solid freshman class this summer. The most recent addition to the team is Canyon native Laci Stephen son. The 5’8” recruit gained experi ence on both sides of the ball at Canyon High School under the direc tion of Tammi Stephenson, her moth er and coach, and played sweeper for the “Lone Stars” club team. Guerrieri said Stephenson has the physical tools to make her presence felt for the Aggies. “Laci is someone who comes in and gives us an added degree of athleti cism, speed and height to our multi faceted system of play,” Guerrieri said. The A&M Soccer Team has a histo ry of bringing in some of the nation’s top recruiting classes. “Every year at Texas A&M we set out to give our state’s most talented fe male soccer players a place where they can continue to develop while com peting for a national championship,” Guerrieri said. “Our recruiting classes have consis tently been rated among the nation’s Top 10. In 1997 and ‘98, our freshman classes were rated in the national top seven. Hopefully, we can put it all to gether on the field this fall and move in closer to No.l.” Stephenson is the fifth recruit to sign with the Aggies this year, follow ing midfielders Jessica Martin of Den ton and Andrea Starns of Arlington, defender Martha Moore of Spring and forward Heather Ragsdale of Arling ton. Ragsdale and Starns were team mates on the “Texas Image” club team. These new recruits will join an Aggie soccer team that already has enjoyed its share of success. A&M finished the 1998 season ranked fourth in the nation with SALLIE TURNER/The Battalion Goaltender Melanie Wilson and the Texas A&M Soccer Team finished last season ranked No. 4 in the nation. a 14-8 record, finishing third in the Big 12 behind Baylor University and the University of Nebraska with a confer ence record of 6-2. The soccer team will host a presea son game Aug. 21 against Klein Chal lenge ‘82. The Aggies’ season official ly begins Aug. 27 at home against Big 12 Conference rival Oklahoma State University. hisiat! •y ne# |A Central Texas Managed Health Care Program Makes More Sense Than Traditional Health Insurance That’s why Bryan-College Station has FIRSTCARE.
