Seru-U 619)645-8434, AUSTIN (AP) — In their 140- day Capitol stay, state legisla tors spent a record amount, cut taxes and watched with fellow Texans as Gov. George W. Bush emerged as a force to be reck oned with in presidential poli tics. The Republican governor started 1999 by inviting law makers to share in his national spotlight. He ended it as the opinion poll front-runner with campaign trips to Iowa and New Hampshire beginning June 12. “I know there was a lot of speculation, particularly because of me,” Bush said. “But by and large, the members (of the Legislature) didn’t let that affect their decisions.” In a slap at the partisan-grid- locked Congress, Bush said Texas showed the nation how lawmaking should be handled. “People from both parties came together for a brief period of time and enacted a lot of law that will make Texas a better place,” he said. “I think people, when they take an objective look, will say this has been a good session.” On the big money issues, law makers took a $6.4 billion sur plus, cut $1.85 billion in taxes and spent a record $98.1 billion — more than $9 billion higher than the current budget. They cut property taxes by ‘7 think people, when they take an objective look, will say this has been a good session. ” - TEX. GOV. GEORGE W. BUSH $1.35 billion, consumer taxes by $277 million and business taxes by $229 million. Bush had wanted more tax cuts — $2.6 billion — but called these “sub stantial.” Critics called it too much spending, too little tax relief. “Using the budget surplus to take us up this higher spending path means trouble for Texas taxpayers down the roa Peggy Venable, director Texas Citizens for a So; Economy, said. “It commits us to funqr these new programs and hi§ salaries, yet when the econc slows down and we have budget surplus, taxpayers; get hit with a tax increase.’ This was only the second sion in the 20th century r Republicans controlled one the Legislature’s two houses But the GOP’s one-sgj Senate majority was enhar by the century’s ffl Republican lieutenant go nor, Rick Perry. (AP) — Working fast, astronauts fixed a broken radio, replaced flawed battery packs and installed foam mufflers over noisy fans Monday aboard the new international space station. They launched into the repairs within minutes of entering the 77-foot orbiting complex late Sunday. Several hours later, much of the work was done. “It literally was open the hatch and run in there and get to work,” flight director Paul Hill said, marveling at the crew’s speed and precision. Two of space shuttle Discovery’s seven astro nauts immediately went to work on the radio sys tem inside the American-made Unity moduf replacing two electronic boxes. The new pa: allowed NASA to once again monitor all systet aboard Unity. The radio link from Unity was lost in April, jn four months after the module was hoisted in orbit. At the same time, Russian Valery Tokarev ar Canadian Julie Payette pulled up the floor insio the Russian-built Zarya control module to reai batteries that had not been charging right It months. Each of the six batteries has three electros meters, and each meter needed to be replaced. cuse tion prop prev juve are i law; pare for t / cute ord criir muc pun ever negl V spoi rece decl of le unf< the F den whc spiti hun inal pare righ / brat indi ratic havi 7 the que E mar ted wot tion juve mat spoi es f< thin Gan I: Turbulence rocks Hagler landing jetliner at DFW Airport GRAPEVINE (AP) — Two flight attendants were injured Monday when an American Airlines flight hit turbulence as it approached Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. None of the 72 passengers aboard Flight 2006 were injured, airline spokesperson Mark Slitt said. The MD-80 flight originated in Seattle and landed at DFW short ly before noon. Thunderstorms were moving through the area when the plane, at 12,000 feet, hit turbu lence about 30 miles from the airport. Slitt said the injuries appear minor.
