BREITLING 1884 Every Day is Earth D« Today marks the 29th celebration of environmental awmm^ BY MARIUM MOHIUDDIN The Battalion E arth Day has been celebrated for almost 30 years, with communities all over the United States getting involved. Earth Day was first started by Dennis Hayes in 1970. “[Hayes] was an undergraduate student at Stanford, and he and a few students would check out all the congressmen who would vote pro/con on environmental issues,” Mallika Anand, presi dent of Texas Environmental Action Coalition and a junior German major, said. “They called them [the congressman] ‘The Dirty Dozen,' and from there, it grew. ” Lisa Whittlesey, extension program specialist with the Horticulture Sciences Department, said Earth Day was set aside as a celebration of our planet. “It is a time to be more aware of our planet and be more environmentally friendly,” Whittlesey said. “It is the air we breath, the wa ter we drink and the food we eat; these all come from the Earth. It is a time to be more aware of our surroundings and be thankful. Learn more about it and to take care of it because it might not be around for us to enjoy. We have to take care of our planet.” April 22 was chosen as Earth Day by the En vironmental Protection Agency. Melanie Krause, co-chair of Environmental Is sues Committee (EIC) and a senior genetic and biochemistry major, said there was no specific reason April 22 was chosen. “[It] was a random day,” Krause said. “In Texas, it happens to correspond with Arbor Day, which is also in the end of April. This day is for people to be more aware of trees. ” In 1991, A&M Earth Week was first started by the EIC, a committee affiliated with the Student Senate. • Using nuclear power to avert global warming by the year 2025 would require that a new nuclear power plant be built every 2.5 days • If everyone in the United States us' sulat- ed windows, the nation would save more off anti nat ural gas each year than Alaska supplies annually • Switching all light bulbs to more < bulbs would eliminate the need for all plants in the United States. nt fluo ) 11 ■arpov * Improving domestic car effcienpifl erage of 19 miles per gallon to 22 mik allow the nation to stop importing ol hr the current; av- jld UWdit. • At the current rate, all tropical fo in a century and all old growth f< x« will be gone in 15-25 years I be gone with- e United States • U.S. municipal: I waste is 50 percent packaging The Environmental Sta’.istics Website Jennifer Weizer, sub-chair of EIC and a sopho more aerospace engineering major, said they will be hosting a variety of events. “There will be activities to get students and the campus involved and to provide them with in formation,” Weizer said. "This is a great organi zation because we are a part of student govern ment and can implement things. We also inform students and want them to learn more about the environment.” Some of the games include Wheel of Waste, in which students have to answer recycling or waste products, an: Shoot, in which students stom: shoot them into a basket.
