Various on-campus ex perts, including University Police Department officers and Student Counseling Ser vices employees, have been trained to assist in the situa tions. Bob Wiatt, director of University Police Depart ment, said University police officers receive training in crisis intervention during basic training and periodic inservices. He said the training can be used in dealing with peo ple in any emotional or volatile situation. “All officers are exposed to how to treat people in crises and how to diffuse a situation, but suicide is something you don’t specif ically train for,” he said. “Po lice officers diffuse and calm a situation until a trained psychologist can arrive.” Birch said specialized training for his staff at Stu dent Counseling Services, specialized training is essen tial.
