The department of psychology
will host the annual Fay Lecture Se
ries in Analytical Psychology Friday
and Saturday to further the ideas of
Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung,
the founder of analytical psycholo
gy-
Dr. James Hollis, director of the
C.G. Jung Educational Center in
Houston, will be the guest speaker.
His lectures will focus on the impor
tance of imagination to human en
deavors.
More than 100 people are expect
ed to attend the series, which begins
Friday at 5 p.m. with greetings by
President Dr. Ray Bowen, president
of Texas A&M, and an introduction
to the series by Hollis. The lectures
will be held Saturday in 206 MSC.
The first lecture will be at 9 a.m.,
and will focus on how imagination is
important to religion.
The second will beat 11 a.m., and
will focus on the role of imagination
in literature. The third will be at 2
p.m., will focus on how artists pre
serve their ideas in paintings. The
fourth will be held at 4 p.m., and will
focus on the role imagination can
play in psychotherapy.
Dr. David Rosen, coordinator of
the series and McMillan professor in
the Department of Psychology, said
the series provides an opportunity to
learn how Jung’s theories can apply
to everyday life.
“Psychology means the study of
the soul," he said. "Depression, the
most common mental disorder in the
world, can be due to a lack of imag
ination and contact with the soul."
Rosen said the lectures will also
focus on how evolution has shaped
spirituality.
“Spirituality is hard wired and it
is adaptive,” he said.
Rosen said there are critics of
Jung's theories, such as behaviorists
and learning theorists who believe
people are bom as blank slates.
Texas A&M University Press will
publish a book on the series. Tom
Retell, director of the
book will be available
Rotell said the Fay
books are popular with
well as the general put:
“These are respect;:
works that can be use:
