Page 2 • Friday, April 9, 1999 EWS Fish BYR^DELUN A Fay lecture series brings discussi on importance of human imagina TUBULARMAN BY BOOMER BY SAMEH FAHMY The Battalion The department of psychology will host the annual Fay Lecture Se ries in Analytical Psychology Friday and Saturday to further the ideas of Swiss psychiatrist Carl Gustav Jung, the founder of analytical psycholo gy- Dr. James Hollis, director of the C.G. Jung Educational Center in Houston, will be the guest speaker. His lectures will focus on the impor tance of imagination to human en deavors. More than 100 people are expect ed to attend the series, which begins Friday at 5 p.m. with greetings by President Dr. Ray Bowen, president of Texas A&M, and an introduction to the series by Hollis. The lectures will be held Saturday in 206 MSC. The first lecture will be at 9 a.m., and will focus on how imagination is important to religion. The second will beat 11 a.m., and will focus on the role of imagination in literature. The third will be at 2 p.m., will focus on how artists pre serve their ideas in paintings. The fourth will be held at 4 p.m., and will focus on the role imagination can play in psychotherapy. Dr. David Rosen, coordinator of the series and McMillan professor in the Department of Psychology, said the series provides an opportunity to learn how Jung’s theories can apply to everyday life. “Psychology means the study of the soul," he said. "Depression, the most common mental disorder in the world, can be due to a lack of imag ination and contact with the soul." Rosen said the lectures will also focus on how evolution has shaped spirituality. “Spirituality is hard wired and it is adaptive,” he said. Rosen said there are critics of Jung's theories, such as behaviorists and learning theorists who believe people are bom as blank slates. Texas A&M University Press will publish a book on the series. Mullen invited interested citi zens to learn more about the Mu nicipal Volunteer Program on the City of College Station Website. He said applications are available on line. “As more positions become available they will be posted on the website,” Mullen said. Mullen said the city will hold a volunteer and coordinator work shop May 18, in conjunction with local organizations. “The program is an exciting pro ject and a lot of positive things can come from it,” Mullen said. Anthony Lake, former U.S. National Security Advisor, Sam Nunn, for mer chairman of the Sen ate Armed Forces Com mittee and Robert Gates, former director of the Central Intelligence Agency will focus on is sues of national security and terrorism as they af fect the country. “Changing of the Guard: National Security for the Post-Cold War Era” will be held tonight at 8 p.m in Rudder Audi torium and will be mod erated by Charlie Rose of the “Charlie Rose Show." Lake, Nunn and Gates will share their govern ment expertise in the fields of executive, leg islative and intelligence security. Rahul Patel, chairman for the Wiley Lecture Se ries, said each man is an expert in their field. “They will talk about the national agencies that were created after the Cold War and what the country needs in terms of security now that the Cold War is over,” he said. A major focus of the lecture will be to discuss potential changes to the country’s security agen cies. Patel said the U.S. has a huge military but that it does not always get results when action is taken. “There are possibili ties for change, such as a smaller, more mobile mil itary, better intelligence or creating covert opera tions,” he said. Patel said terrorism will also be a part of the lecture.
