effective teachin lii'ii
BY MELISSA JORDAN
The Battalion
Texas A&M faculty and
administrators discussed ways
to improve the quality of
teaching through evaluations
and rewards at a conference
Friday, and will strive to over
come the misperception that
universities promote research
over teaching.
Panelists from the College of
Agriculture and Life Sciences
(COALS) shared plans, derived
from participation in the origi
nal nationwide project in 1995,
to improve the quality of uni
versity teaching.
The panelists provided sug
gestions including evaluations
for tenure and pay increases,
departmental awards and
reserved parking spaces for
department faculty members-
of-the-year.
Dr. Larry Oliver, project
coordinator and associate dean
for the College of Liberal Arts,
said the goal of the project was
to improve the quality of
teaching at the University
without being a detriment to
research efforts.
Dr. Bill Perry, executive
associate provost, said the
importance of scholarship and
research is seen through the
ability of professors to bring
new material, a spirit of
inquiry and enthusiasm for
learning and research.
