Free Form Delusions, should have been a chance for them to showcase their talent and get one step closer to sign ing a major label record deal. This album falls short of these expectations. Linus is lead by Chris Pate on guitars and vocals, the bass is laid down by Eric Dickerson and Sean Eubanks rounds out the band on drums. The strongest musician is Eu banks, whose talent on the drums stands out greatly from the rest of the band. The music on some of the songs is pass able, but it will take more to make this album good. This album displays the band’s potential, but is greatly marred by some weak songs with weak lyrics. This is sad, because without songs like “Cartoon Logic” and “Sail Away,” this album could have been decent. The album’s better songs are “Love’s Indecent Proposal” and “Hate.” The problem is that most of the songs fall into the rather mediocre category of col lege rock. Closing out the album is a strong musical piece called “Free Form Delusions.” The band should have stuck with this kind of creativity instead of digging themselves into a hole with mu sic that could be transposed from song to song without any body noticing. (Grade: D) reaking into the music scene for a rock ’n’ roll band is not an easy task, es pecially if the band comes from a small town with predomi nantly country roots. This is exactly the situation facing Linus — and the band hopes it can overcome these obstacles. The three-piece band was formed three years ago and only one member, Chris Pate, re mains from the original ensemble. The band went through different musi cians before finally set tling on the group of performers that now make up Linus. Pate said he knew when the band started I '} .J .Nr* —By Scott Harris that he wanted to make music his life. “My first intention was to be a serious musician; it’s what I real ly wanted to do,” Pate said. "Not everybody that has played for this band had wanted to do that. Some just wanted to be in college and do the band thing, and that’s cool, but now we are all serious about the music and everybody wants to do it big time.” Playing with Pate is drummer Sean Eubanks, who has been playing with Linus for one and one half years, and newly ac quired bassist Eric Dickerson. Linus just completed their first full length album. Free Form Delu sions, which includes songs from their EP The Sky. The band start ed recording the album in August and spent six months working on their first release. Pate said they spent more time with this album than is normal for bands who are not signed with major labels. Eric Dickerson, Chris Pate and Sean Eubanks “Most bands without record deals go in and put out an album very quickly,” Pate said. “We had the luxury of being able to spend a lot of time on it. We were able to sit down and listen to it and change stuff. “1 would spend weeks working on single guitar parts just to get them how 1 liked.” Pate said their album is about breaking molds and stereotypes that are commonly associated with the band. “Basically, I was just sitting around one night and I thought about the people who saw us three years ago when we sucked and developed certain ideas about three guys who didn’t give a s— t,” Pate said. “These people had delusions about us and we want ed to open their minds.” Linus has a managerial and pub lishing agreement, but are still shopping their CD around looking for a major label deal. Pate said the band has got the at- PHOTO COURTIS' / .of Linus will be performing^ tention of some record coniq “ We are staning to get: terest generated,” Pate think we are on the thre lC something great Jj ing is definite." E, M Linus started their localjB, ers Bullwinkles and has expa their venues to include He Dallas and Waco. Most of Linus’ followinsi ally comes from these tov they still play local dates. Pate said the College crowd is starting to comec again. “In the past six monltt haven’t played here too mJ Pate said. “But the hardf music scene in CollegeStari getting better. I thinkit’sdj the younger students who( out to the shows and really! into it.” Linus will be bringing t,| hard rock music to the Cow f this Friday night.
