Page 12 • Tuesday, February 23, 1999 MAIL CALL Church, state must remain separated It would appear that many stu dents writing to Mail Call recently felt that out nation’s laws should be based on The Bible. This opinion is both dangerous and outrageous. As the 1797 Treaty with Tripoli states, “The gov ernment of the United States of America is not in any sense found ed on the Christian religion.” If our laws happen to corre spond to parts of The Bible, that is fine. However, laws should never be made or broken in order to comply with any religious doctrine. One must keep in mind that all reli gions are entirely rooted in "faith.” No one on this planet can truly know who is correct. Therefore, we must make our laws based on what works best for our country, not on what certain groups of peo ple consider "morally correct.” Alycia Schwendeman Class of '01 Yell leaders useless for Aggie basketball I am writing in disgust of what I have witnessed at A&M men’s bas ketball games this year. I respect A&M’s traditions just as much as everyone. However, the yell leaders do not belong at our basketball games. Time and time again, I’ve seen a rowdy crowd at Reed Arena silenced by "Hump It Ags.” Every team that comes to Reed knows that a simple timeout will kill any momentum we have gained. During these timeouts, the student section is silenced in order to perform the yells. What the A&M basketball teams needs is some fast-paced music thrown in these timeouts to keep the crowd in the game. I will say that I enjoy the dance team. They add excitement to the game and keep the team’s momentum up. If we want to have a basketball team for the new millennium, we need to foster the proper basketball en vironment that other top basket ball schools do.
