Michael Losasso, president of the Order of Omega and a senior management information systems major, said the Brazos Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross was selected as the charity to benefit from the week’s events because it is a local organization. “We wanted to contribute lo cally to a community where we know the funds will be used,” he said. Hacking Continued from Page 1 “Part of the difficulty in the real world is that the bad guys don’t work 8 to 5,” he said. Maj. Curt Carver, a member of the gold team and a computer sci ence graduate student, said the class provides students an oppor tunity to learn through participa tion. “In the past, the Department of Justice, the Air Force and the New York Times have been attacked,” he said. “The bad guys (hackers) can take over [Websites] and put their own information up.” Marti said the goal of the black team is to recognize the weak nesses in the gold team’s network system and attack the system without being detected. “It’s no good to break into the system and be detected,” he said. “You don’t break into a store just to get your face on a video and leave your wallet on the counter. Students are learning how to break-in, steal the information and not be detected by the gold team.” Students have invested more than 100 hours in the class build ing the network security system. They are involved in a 24-hour- per-day exercise to invade it. 1 > IT 1 >1 \ ATHD IV rj I I jA f\ ± February 27, 1999 Plant a Tree! • 1 acre of trees can keep 18 people alive. • 1 large tree can release up to 400 gallons of water into the air each day. • 1 tree less than 3 inches in diameter can absorb the amount of carbon dioxide produced by a car driven 10 miles. • 1 acre of trees can absorb the amount of carbon dioxide produced by a car driven 26,000 miles.
