Bush, fending off per sistent questions about a possi ble run for pres ident, said yesterday he wanted to soak in this week’s inaugural hoopla that four years ago was just an emotion al blur. “This time I hope to be able to observe it,’’ Bush said after speaking to a Martin Luther King Jr. Day cele bration in Houston that kicked off two days of inaugural activities. “Last time I was so emotion al I didn’t pay much attention to what was going on.” Bush, beginning his second four-year term as Texas gover nor, declined to preview today’s inaugural speech. “I shouldn’t put it out too early, otherwise you won’t listen to it,” he laughed. “This is going to talk about how I see the 21st century in Texas, what challenges we face and make sure everybody participates.” Bush reiterated that no deci sion had been made about a possible White House run in 2000. But he acknowledged that his wife, Laura, was resisting and his twin 17-year-old daughters > all still were not enthusiastic. He also said if the thre were against it, he would consider running. “I think my family will sup port me whatever decision I make,” Bush said. “If I choose to seek the pres idency, they’ll be for me. If 1 choose not to seek the presiden cy, they’ll understand why. I think they’re going to love me either way.” Bush described his wife as not pushing for the family to be put through “the meat grinder of national politics.” As for his daughters, the gov ernor said: “I haven’t met any 17-year-old child that’s anxious to be drug through the national spotlight. “You bet our teen-age daugh ters are reluctant. I would have been the same way at age 17.” Laura Bush, standing behind her husband as he was pep pered with questions from re porters, would not get drawn into the debate and insisted she only was looking forward to the inauguration. “It’s a huge decision, as everyone knows, and we haven’t made it yet,” she said of a presidential run. “Right now we’re focusing on Texas.” After the Houston appear ance, Bush, also accompanied by Lt.
