The Cotton Bowl was no different, as the 15th-ranked Long horns rode Williams for 203 yards on 30 carries as they defeated Mis sissippi State University, 38-11, their first Cotton Bowl victory since 1982. Williams’ rushing total was a Texas bowl record and the third- highest total ever in the Cotton Bowl. He added touchdown runs of 37 and two yards. Nokia Sugar Bowl For Texas A&M University, New Orleans holds some sweet memo ries. The last time the Aggies played in the Sugar Bowl, they walked away with the school’s only national championship. Their lat est visit, however, will bring up sour memories, as second-ranked Ohio State University defeated the llth-ranked Aggies, 24-14. The Aggies held the Buckeyes to three-and-out on the first posses sion of the game, then promptly scored a touchdown on the ensu ing possession. Despite the quick start, the Ag gies faded away. Ohio State ran off 24 unanswered points and put the game away. Running from the Bulls Chicago to deal Pippen to Rockets for Roy Rogers, picks after lockout ends NEW YORK (AP) — Scottie Pippen will be traded from the Chicago Bulls to the Houston Rockets im mediately after the lockout ends, several league sources told The Associated Press on Monday. The Bulls, who will sign Pippen to a deal worth $67.2 million for. five years before trading him, will get forward Roy Rogers and a second-round draft pick in return. Although the salaries for Pippen and Rogers do not match, the deal is allowable under NBA rules because Houston will have enough salary cap room to fit in Pippen’s contract. His salary for this season will be $10.6 million. The deal, also reported Monday by Houston TV sta tion KR1V, will not be finalized until the lockout ends Wednesday or Thursday following approval by lawyers from both sides. Pippen, a six-time champion with the Bulls, had talked to the Rockets about signing with them as a free agent. It was not immediately clear why he agreed to a sign-and-trade deal, but other teams were known to be discussing other sign-and-trade deals with Bulls general manager Jerry Krause. The acquisition of Pippen should clear the way for Charles Barkley to re-sign with Houston. It will give the Rockets a formidable front line of Barkley, Pippen and Hakeem Olajuwon. “We’re not going to confirm anything,” Rockets spokesman Tim Frank said. “The lockout is technically not over. We’re still under lockout restrictions. No deal NBA settlement delayed NEW YORK (AP) — The NBA lockout will last at least another day longer, meaning the upcoming trades of Scottie Pippen and Latrell Sprewell — along with all other league business — will be on hold until Wednesday at the earliest. Deals cannot be finalized until lawyers finish putting the lockout settlement into writing. Attorneys for both sides were huddled away Monday night trying to resolve several differences that have popped up, and a Tuesday night settle ment appeared to be the best-case scenario. “We’ll know for sure tomorrow (TYiesday) whether we’ll be starting Wednesday or Thursday,” league spokesman Chris Brienza said. can officially be done until that cloak is lifted.” Pippen, 33, has been with Chicago since the 1987- 88 season when he was drafted out of Central Arkansas. Last year, the forward averaged 19.1 points and 5.2 rebounds per game. The seven-time All-star is considered one of the top three free agents up for grabs as NBA teams pre pare to open training camps delayed by the 6 1/2- month lockout. Pippen should be in uniform for the Rockets when they play an exhibition game against San Antonio on Saturday. Helling signs with Rangers ARLINGTON, Texas (AP) — Rick Helling, who won 20 games last season to tie for the major league lead, agreed Monday to a $10.5 million, three-year con tract with the Texas Rangers through 2001. Helling, who had a 20-7 record with a 4.41 ERA in 33 starts, will make $2.25 million in 1999, $3.75 million in 2000, and $4.5 million in 2001. “My wife and I,felt it was a good deal and we’re happy with the confidence the Rangers showed in us for the long term,” Helling said. The 28-year-old right-hander made $216,500 last year and be came one of the players with 2- 3 years of major league service who became eligible for salary arbitration because of the 1990 lockout settlement. Helling was the first Ranger pitcher to win his first six starts in a season last season. He went 5-0 in his last eight starts. mii:.- HljUI'JIlTTITlT Office Products CHAIRS B8401 Hi-Back Black leather Chair 195 K.D.
