He beat competitors including Lyle Lovett, LeAnn Rimes and a talking cow when Tex ans chose their favorite “Don’t Mess with Texas” anti-littering advertising spot. “Mamas, tell all your babies, ’Don’t mess with Texas,”’ Nelson sang in the ad, perched on a stool in the middle of a traffic-less highway. The TV ad received 905 votes out of more than 6,000 ballots cast by mail, telephone and the Internet between Sept. 1 and Oct. 16. Nelson’s radio ad featuring the same song also led the pack with 982 votes, according tollierff-Davis EnviroMedia Inc. The original ads, featuring a variety of celebrities and a chatty cud-chewer, were cre ated by Austin-based GSD&M Advertising. The first one aired in 1986. BY KRISTIN STOCKTON The Battalion More than 800 Texas A&M students were inducted into the A&M chapter of Golden Key National Honor Society last night in Rudder Theater. Golden Key is a national honor society that recognizes the top 15 percent of ju niors and seniors in all fields. It was found ed by a group of students at Georgia State University in 1977. Over 270 colleges and universities across the nation have Gold en Key chapters, as well as one chapter each in Australia, Canada, and Malaysia. Don Curtis, academic coordinator of the Office of Honors Program and Acad emic Scholarships, said he was pleased with the A&M chapter’s performance. “This is the first year the Texas A&M chapter was awarded an honorable men tion, which means that it is one of the top 30 chapters internationally,” Curtis said. The initiates were presented with a certificate recognizing their academic ac complishments. In addition, Kathryn Lineberger, a junior journalism major, and Sarah Seidel, a senior accounting major, were awarded a scholarship for outstanding achievement at Texas A&M. Lineberger has a 4.0 grade point ratio and is a member of MSG Hospitality, MSG Council and Diamond Darlings. Seidel has a 4.0 GPR and is a member of MSG Hos pitality and Pi Beta Phi sorority. Five honorary members were inducted into Golden Key as well. These people were chosen by their contributions on the University, local and national levels. Six teen people were nominated. The honorary members are: Dr. Dou glas Brooks, assistant professor of English; Dr. Nehemiah Geva, assistant professor of political science; Celia Goode, owner of University Title Co.; Dr. Michael Green- wald, professor of speech communica tions and theater arts; and Cathy Martin, graphic designer and illustrator.
