Takanori Tachibana, a senior bioenvironmental science ma jor, said there are many special foods associated with the time surrounding the end of the year, especially the New Year holiday itself. amaebi DAVID PETERS HYUNDAI SUBARU SOON TO BE SUMMERALL 1309 VZ An -^IMPORTS INC. The New Year is considered to be one of the most important parts of the year in Japan, and most citizens make special ef forts to follow the traditions that are associated with that part of the year. Food plays a large part in the New Year celebration, according to a Website on holiday activities in Hiroshima. Omochi, a traditional rice cake, is one of the most impor tant foods linked to the New Year, and almost all families start the new year with a meal of omochi that is either grilled or served in a soup. Easy-to-prepare vegetable dishes are also popular during this time of year, since most stores remain closed for the three-day New Year holiday. Ron Lai, a electrical engineer ing graduate student and a mem ber of the Japan Club, said there is an unfortunate side effect sometimes associated with the yearly omochi-fest. “At New Year’s, the rice they eat is really gooey and sticky,” Lai said, “and they usually have a few people die every year. “It’s really easy to choke if you’re drunk.” Another culinary tradition associated with the last quarter of the year is the appearance of certain edible mushrooms. Mushroom hunting is a popular pastime for many, ac cording to the Tourist Office at Saijo, Japan, and reservations may be made by those interested in finding their own food in the wild. The most popular mushrooms are matsutake, shiitake, and shimeji, but matsutake is consid ered the finest of the bunch. Found in pine forests, the mushroom can grow to a width of more than eight inches and is prized by connoisseurs, the months bring changes as well. “You can get cold noodles in the summer, as well as hot noo dles in the winter,” he said. In general, Lai said the _ differences in cultures should not keep others from trying Japanese food. “Japanese food usual ly isn’t that spicy,” Lai said. ikura “Most people may find it kind of bland or very salty. It’s not like Mexican food, which is really hot. “Most Americans will like Japanese food if they eat it, it’s not that hard to office said. Not all special foods are limit ed to cold weather. Lai said the summer California roll get used to.” While sushi, tem- pura and other dishes T i may be in the vo cabulary of most people who have ven tured beyond the local McDonalds, everything is not known by most would-be Japanese food connoisseurs. ,-v “There’s kind of like a secret ingre dient in most Japanese Lai said. “It’s dried anchovies.
