Hispanic Heritage Month contini
with Caliente Festival celebratiF
BY NON! SRIDHARA
The Battalion
The 1998 Caliente Festival,
sponsored by the Hispanic Busi
ness Students’ Association, was
held Saturday in front of the Aca
demic Plaza.
The festival featured booths
from various Hispanic organiza
tions throughout campus.
There was live entertainment
throughout the event which in
cluded the Aggie Wranglers, the
Aggie Dance team and a mariachi
band. The event concluded with
the presentation of the Mr. and
Ms. Hispanic Heritage Month.
The winners of both pageants
are chosen by their activities at
A&M and in the Hispanic com
munity, as well as their academ
ic accomplishments.
The winner of Mr. Hispanic
Heritage Month, sponsored by
Kappa Delta Chi sorority, was
Alexander Quiros, a graduate stu
dent in clinical psychology.
Quiros represented the His
panic Graduate Students Associ
ation (HGSA). He has worked in
the Bryan-College Station area of
fering marital counseling to
Spanish-speaking couples.
Quiros also has volunteered at
the Women’s Prison as a drug ed
ucator and as a probation officer
in Bryan.
Quiros said he thought one of
the most important things about
the Caliente Festival is the shar
ing of cultures that goes on.
“This really helps bring to
gether different groups and ex
posing different cultures,” he
said. “For example, l am Puerto
Rican, but I get to share my
knowledge and culture here,
since it is predominantly Mexi-
can-American. ”
The winner of Ms. Hispanic
Heritage Month, sponsored by
the Sigma Lambda Beta fraterni
ty, went to Monica McArthur,
who represented Ballet Folklori-
