SRIDHARA The Battalion The 1998 Caliente Festival, sponsored by the Hispanic Busi ness Students’ Association, was held Saturday in front of the Aca demic Plaza. The festival featured booths from various Hispanic organiza tions throughout campus. There was live entertainment throughout the event which in cluded the Aggie Wranglers, the Aggie Dance team and a mariachi band. The event concluded with the presentation of the Mr. and Ms. Hispanic Heritage Month. The winners of both pageants are chosen by their activities at A&M and in the Hispanic com munity, as well as their academ ic accomplishments. The winner of Mr. Hispanic Heritage Month, sponsored by Kappa Delta Chi sorority, was Alexander Quiros, a graduate stu dent in clinical psychology. Quiros represented the His panic Graduate Students Associ ation (HGSA). He has worked in the Bryan-College Station area of fering marital counseling to Spanish-speaking couples. Quiros also has volunteered at the Women’s Prison as a drug ed ucator and as a probation officer in Bryan. Quiros said he thought one of the most important things about the Caliente Festival is the shar ing of cultures that goes on. “This really helps bring to gether different groups and ex posing different cultures,” he said. “For example, l am Puerto Rican, but I get to share my knowledge and culture here, since it is predominantly Mexi- can-American. ” The winner of Ms. Hispanic Heritage Month, sponsored by the Sigma Lambda Beta fraterni ty, went to Monica McArthur, who represented Ballet Folklori- MIKE PUENTES Three-year-old Alexandra Lance takes a swing at a pinataiataf i Academic Plaza at the Caliente Festival Saturday. j co Celestial. McArthur, a senior molecular biology and microbi ology major, has worked as part of the St. Mary Aide Care team, been a mentor to elementary stu dents and worked as a translator at the Bryan Health Clinic. Both Quiros and McArthur were awarded $200 sew for the spring semester.
