Page 6 • Thursday, September 24, 1998 c ampus Texas Text Continued from Page 1 At the present time, TTE in cludes approximately 450 students and has registered 250 books to their online database. Before the program was devel oped, students with various dis abilities had to rely on cassette-tape versions of necessary textbooks. The process of recording and dis tributing these tapes required long hours of preparation and were of ten of poor quality. “I had the idea of transferring these textbooks online. E-texts had been used before for the visually impaired, but it wasn’t traditional,” Sweeney said. At the beginning of the program, Sweeney scanned one page at a time. Although it started out time con suming, the method quickly turned into an effective combination. Once the texts started to go on line, Sweeney began speaking with other universities around Texas about similar programs. “I started talking to these other universities and found out that they were attempting similar ideas, and that we were duplicating a lot of the same books,” Sweeney said. “We were wasting a lot of effort working separately.” With the help of Toby Boenig, project coordinator for TTE, Sweeney sent outlines of the pro gram and invitations to colleges and universities around Texas. “We sent out 100 invitations, and we got an enormous response,” Sweeney said. “We already have 25 schools online with us. Southwest Texas State [University] was the first to respond to our invitation.” Legal issues are a concern for Sweeney and Boenig. “We are working off of a 1996 Copyright Amendment and Section 121 of the Copyright Code,” Sweeney said. "A&M is the first university to create and organize a program like this specifically for students with disabilities. I think other universities are hesitant about this type of program because of the possible legal ramifications.” Big Screen Football on Sundays! *2.99 Pitchers of beer Ml Day ENTERTAINMENT KAftAWE AND YOU! with Jill as your Karaoke hostK No Cover • Tie-Sat • 9-Close Post Oak Mall a k rtateea Street \ * ^ (fate$*01 1 4 693-6429 Tell your Friends Donating Plasma, you sit back in a lounge chair & read, study, talk or dream in a place filled with friends.
