Mauro outlines plan to reduce class size
AUSTIN (AP) — Democratic
gubernatorial candidate Garry
Mauro touted Tbesday his “zero-
tolerance” policy for capping class
sizes, including a proposal to build
$2 billion worth of new schools.
Mauro wants to borrow the
money to build new schools from
the Permanent School Fund, the
state’s trust fund for public schools.
The proposal would require a con
stitutional amendment, which vot
ers would have to approve.
Mauro said the money would
be paid back over a 30-year peri
od with interest and there would
be no decrease in the $16.3 billion
Permanent School Fund or in the
Available School Fund, the mon
ey distributed to schools.
