The Battalion AMPCIS Thursday • July K School district puts restriction on baggy clothes WACO, Texas (AP) — The Midway Independent School District has bagged baggy clothing in an effort to keep guns and other weapons out of school. The new rule, approved by the district late Tuesday says, "no shirts, jackets or coats longer than mid-thigh length (no longer than the tips of the fingers) will be allowed. "The only real changes are the dusters and the jackets," Superintendent Randy Albers told the Waco Tribune-Herald for a story Wednesday. "You're going to see more issues on safety. You're going to see more response to threats — oral and written threats. And we put new language in there to respond to threats." Assistant Superintendent J.D. Kennedy proposed the dress code change after a school committee was shown photographs showing how baggy, untucked shirts and long coats can conceal weapons as large as rifles. Kennedy said the violence striking middle-class subur ban schools across the nation motivated the committee to study the issue. Albers said regular checks may be carried out to enforce the dress code. Two existing rules require all students to tuck in under shirts and boys to tuck shirt- tails "into the trousers unless they are moderate in length, cut square and hemmed around the bottom." Aside from dress code changes, district rules for the 1998-99 school year prohibit threats of physical violence, Kennedy said. Such threats will result in immediate placement in in school suspension until an ad ministrator, counselor and teacher determine whether po lice should be involved.
