Battalio Cetera V\ P ■ i ^ 1 m ^ Tuesday • May 5, Outspoken Gingrich addresses Americans DALLAS (AP) — Continuing his criticism of President Clinton, U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Monday “this country looks terrible in the world.” “This really should be a time of great sadness and pain for every American,” Gingrich said during .a speech in Dallas. “We should ’..'approach this as patriots, not "partisans. We should be con- ^cerned about the presidency, not j any one person.” Gingrich hammered home the same message he left Friday in Phoenix, Satur- . i.day ern in South- California fp’and Sunday in J Las Vegas. i;| The Ameri- can people '• have the right III to know if the president has ii. committed a Jj| crime, he said. 'ii The president is not above the ■■■■■■■■■■■ 'i' law. And as the ^' country’s chief law enforcement " agent, Clinton himself should want I,'; to get to the bottom of the contro- j" versies that plague him. i!| Gingrich was in Dallas to speak !'! before 350 people at a fundraiser i!i luncheon for U.S. Rep. Pete Ses- sions, R-Dallas, who’s running for i,| reelection. I' 1 Gingrich said he was one of the iii first Washington leaders to urge i;[ others not to rush to judgment iii when the sex and perjury scandal i' 1 hit the Wliite House. 'n But then he became angered by iJI some politicians’ suggestion that ii Secret Service agents should not i[|; have to testify in investigations into 'i the president’s conduct. 2 “I thought, as a historian, this “This really should be a time of great sadness and pain for every American. ” Newt Gingrich U.S. House Speaker goes to the very core of American civilization,” he said. “The Secret Service does not work for the president. The Secret Service works for the American people.” Gingrich also repeated his four main goals for America, which he presented during speeches over the past few days: fight drugs, improve education, reform Social Security and reduce taxes. The outspoken Gingrich used those ideas as a launching pad to tout his fellow GOP legislators and bash the Clinton administration. “When you have no moral authority, it doesn’t matter what you tell kids. They’re not going to listen to you. This admin istration has no moral authority,” he said. “The presi dent says, ‘Please put down that cigarette so I can give you a free needle.’ What kind of message is that?” Gingrich also praised El Paso educator Tony Trujillo for reform ing the city’s second-largest school district. He called Trujillo the wisest edu cator he’s met. “Their mission statement is, every young person in the school system will graduate, fluently bilin gual in two languages, and be able to go to college,” he said. “Washington cannot run the schools of the state of Texas and will only make a mess of them if they try.” The largely partisan crowd em braced Gingrich’s ideas.
