J. Langer Directed by Steve Boyum Rated PG Playing at Hollywood 16 Critique: F+ Chris Martin staff writer tame. You’ve seen As Good As It Gets. Well now it’s time to Meet the Dee dies. Meet the what? More like, “Meet the back of my head as I run screaming from the theater.” If you feel as if you haven’t been saying “I don’t think so” enough or need some prac tice making that clicking noise of disgust with your tongue and the back of your teeth, then Meet the Deedles is the movie to see. The movie follows the wacky misadventures of Phil and Stew Deedle, two bum bling but lovable surfer-dudes who turn their fish-out-of-wa- ter situation into a come-from- behind, feel-good victory. Apparently no one told Walt Disney’s frozen head that the whole Bill and Ted craze ended years ago, and needs not be repeated. When Phil and Stew get ex pelled from high school, their father decides to send the boys to survival camp. Through a series of — you guessed it — wacky misadven tures, the Deedle brothers find themselves mistaken for two Yellowstone park ranger re- Steve and Phil Deedle (left to right. You know those movies that catch you breathing a relieved sigh when the heroes narrowly escape death? This is not one of those movies. You will find yourself chanting, “Die already.” It was sad to see a Disney movie working blue. In one scene, Stew extols the virtue of a squirrel-skin jock strap, since squirrels are naturals at “hiding nuts.” The only entertaining per formance is given by Ana Gasteyer of “Saturday Night Live,” who plays nature-loving ranger recruit Mel. Unfortu nately, she only is on screen for a total of three minutes. The previews say it all. “These guys didn’t invent cool. They’re just taking it to the ex treme.” Extreme levels of gut- wrenching stupidity. And in a bad way. Ernest Goes to Camp was stupid, but a fun-filled romp nonetheless. I think Meet the Deedles was actually designed to make you dumber. Even more bizarre than the premise of this greasy, nut-filled fruitcake of a movie is the partic ipation of Dennis Hopper as dis- gruntled ex-park ranger Frank Slater. Does Hopper need mon ey that badly? Did he learn noth ing from Super Mario Bros. ? Hopper will be laughing all the way to the bank, but you will be crying all the way back to your car. Stay home. Take up macrame. Do anything. Any thing but Meet the Deedles.
