Sports Friday • March' Women’s tennis hammered by No. 1 Stanford By Philip W. Peter Staff writer In a wind-shortened match, the Texas A&M Women’s Tennis Team (11-6) managed only a single victory in Thursday’s 5-1 loss to the visiting Stanford Cardinal, the No. 1 team in the nation. The lone victory was posted by freshman Eva Mar- cial who beat Stanford’s Marisa Mallennan in straight sets, 7-6, 7-6. Mallennan and Marcial traded games throughout the second set. But in the tie-breaker, Mar cial used pure power to keep the slower Mallennan mov ing and finished her off with a drop shot just over the net to finish her off. Coach Bobby Kleinecke said Marcial did a good job of battling not only Mallennan, but also the wind. “Anytime you get a win against the No. 1 team in the nation, you’ve done a good job,’’ Kleinecke said, “and I want to praise Eva for that. She did a great job today of getting Kleinecke a lot of balls in in a tough situation.” This weekend, A&M will not have to play a team ranked as highly as Stanford, but they* back-to-back matches Saturdayaga Iowa State. Kleinecke said histeamr plans on competing for the conferencd! “These next three 1 matches in confe big for us,” Kleinecke said. “We’re3-3i^ in the middle of the pack. We needtoc here in the middle and it’s goodtogei: play some conference matches again The Missouri match starts at 8:3i! Iowa State match starts at 2 p.m.,1 Smith Tennis Center.
