The most common scenario re volves around someone who pur chases over-the-counter antibiotics in Mexico, then fails to finish the dose or even neglects to visit a doc tor, said Dr. Jorge Magana, director of the El Paso City-County Health and Environmental District. In many cases, the virus only grows stronger while an early diag nosis and comprehensive treat ment could have brought the illness under control. “The access of‘automedication’ has me very concerned,” Magana said. “It’s very hard to play doctor and, in some cases, it could be like playing Russian roulette. You can end up with very bad problems.” He said people who self-med- icate are making assumptions about what is wrong with them. “Chances are you’re not right, or you use the inadequate medication, or you don’t use it for the prescribed amount of time,” Magana said. Two El Paso children have died so far from an infection caused by group A streptococcus, which has appeared throughout the state in recent months. Symptoms are sometimes like those of the common flu, along with a skin rash and abdominal pain. Two of the most severe but least-common forms of invasive group A strep are necrotizing fasci itis, also known as the “flesh-eating bacteria,” and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome, a rapidly pro gressing infection that injures in ternal organs such as the kidneys, liver and lungs. Austin libraries it adult Internet aa AUSTIN (AP) — The Austin Public Library is about to begin an experiment that gives adults un fettered access to the Internet while preventing children from viewing sexually explicit material on library computers. Officials hope the two-month experiment, beginning Sunday at four locations, will avoid a First Amendment lawsuit. Since last year, when the library installed a software package called Cyper Patrol on its 56 public Inter net computers, free speech advo cates have been critical because adults are blocked from some ma- h“i i.il. Libraries across the country that provide public Internet access have been seeking a balance be tween free speech rights and the ability of minors it , pornography.
