U.S. District Judge Joe Fish asked 65 potential panelists in the federal bank and mail fraud case whether they recognized any of the 100 names on the witness list. He also asked if they had encoun tered any problems with the govern ment or “any experience that left sort of a bad taste in your mouth that the government would not be starting off on equal footing with the defen dants if you are a judge in this case." Richard McLaren, his wife, Eve lyn, and seven followers are accused of issuing the worthless warrants, which looked like cashier’s checks. Millionaire attempts to divorce w apparently commits suicide soon a m isL- Hi GALVESTON (AP) —The case of a 68-year-old mil lionaire who filed to divorce his young wife of 44 days and later apparently committed suicide headed to court Monday where attorneys were trying to resolve where in Texas the legal fight over his $ 10 million es tate should take place. Donna Peterson, 37, a frequent but unsuccessful Republican congressional candidate in East Texas, filed a petition in her home Orange County saying she is due $4 million from her late husband, Absalom T. Webber Jr., plus another $1 million because she says she is pregnant. Webber, who made his fortune selling oil field pipe, was found dead Dec. 5 in his bed at a Galveston Island beachhouse. Police believe it was suicide. He had six cuts on his right wrist and a double-edge razor blade was found lying on his abdomen. A Galveston County medical examiner, however, said he could not rule whether the man’s death was suicide, accident or homicide. Cause of death, the coroner said, was a heart attack. Four days after his death, Peterson filed a petition claiming she was due her portion of the estate and produced a document she says Webber signed. Webber had filed Aug. 29 that named upon his death. Currently, the United States al lows up to 65,000 high-skilled for eigners into the country annually under the H-IB visa category. Sili con Valley employers and others in the booming high-tech sector con tend that annual cap is far too low, preventing them from hiring qual ified foreigners for jobs they are unable to fill domestically. Sen. Spencer Abraham, who chairs the Senate immigration sub committee, this week will intro duce a bill that would hike the cur rent annual visa category to rough ly 90,000. The Michigan Republi can’s legislation also would provide a safety valve, allowing the govern ment to use 25,000 additional visas from a different visa category if the H-1B cap is reached. High-tech companies have been vigorously lobbying Con gress and the Clinton administra tion to increase the visa category, complaining of a shortage of qual ified U.S. computer programmers, systems analysts and other high- tech workers.
