People in the News ''' 1 ■ ju Friday Saturday Sunday Downey Equal treatment needed for actors MONTEREY PARK, Calif. (AP) — Work-release must cease for Robert Downey Jr. So says the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which opposes any more escort ed excursions for the actor, who is serving a six-month jail sentence for drug violations. Downey has twice been allowed to leave jail for a day to work on movies. The most recent trip came Feb. 17, when deputies es corted him to Paramount Studios to do some recording. “It’s too disruptive and not the way to operate a jail for the con venience of any inmate, no matter who that might be,” Sheriff Sher man Block said Wednesday. Judge Lawrence A. Mira ordered Downey, 32, to pay for the escorts. After a series of drug arrests and second chances, the actor was sent to jail Dec. 8 for violat ing probation by failing to stay clean and sober. On Feb. 13, Downey suffered a slight cut on his, nose gfter fighting with another inmpte. He vyas moved to another jail across the street. Spice Girls’ show canceled in India NEW DELHI, India (AP) — The Spice Girls have no plans to per form at an Indian archaeological site famed for its erotic sculp tures, a spokeswoman for the group said Thursday. A newspaper report about the British pop group’s planned per formance in November in the cen tral Indian town of Khajuraho drew protests from a leading ex ponent of the classical dance form called Bharatanatyam. “The profile of the Spice Girls does not match that of the tem ples,” Geeta Chandran said last week. “Eroticism sans spirituality will be reduced to pornography.” On Thursday, Sharon Hanley of the London-based agency that handles public relations for the group said: “That story broke here a week ago and it was not true.” Archaeological authorities have barred even Indian classical dancers from performing at the temples of Khajuraho, 300 miles southeast of New Delhi. • Throwaway People (blues) @ Cow Hop • Clandestine (celtic) @ Crooked Path • Soul Hat with Steamroller (rock) @ Dixie Theater • Javaheads (blues) @ Sweet Eugene's • Storyville with Carolyn Wonderland and the Impe rial Monkeys (blues rock) @ 3rd Floor Cantina • Spencer's Rocket (rock) @ Cow Hop • Inspector 12 with Grub worm and Tim Week (rock) @ Crooked Path • Chris Duarte with Sun set Heights (rock) @ Dixie Theater • The Blue Note All-Stars (blues) @ Fitzwilly's • Ruthie Foster @ Sweet Eugene's • Cosy Sheridan KEOS benefit @ Crooked Pil \ ■ * Also, look foi ■ Sneaky Pete andi Wednesday Nigl Live Sing Alongi The Cow Hop I V (>i 'n:i m.
