Aggie Baseball Team at home to square off with Tarleton State ■■HUH 1 ROBERT MCKAY/The Battalion Junior centerfielder Jason Tyner is off to a hot start, hit ting .667 (8 for 12) after the Aggies’ first three games. By Travis Harsch Staff writer After yesterday’s road trip to Beaumont to take on the Lamar Cardinals was rained out, the Aggie Baseball Team returns to Olsen Field this afternoon to take on the Division II Tarleton State Texans. The game will be the first of the 1998 season for Tar leton State, who is returning just one pitcher and three position starters from last season’s 27-24 squad. Coach Mark Johnson said last weekend’s games gave him an opportunity to compare his team to where he wants it to be at this early point in the season. “Now we have a measuring stick,” Johnson said. “We’ve been playing each other since September, we can go back and refine, and realize that they’re keeping score out here.” Impatience at the plate is one of the things the team needs to work on refining, said junior outfielder Jason Tyner. “It’s just waiting back on the ball,” Tyner said. “We’re having trouble waiting back. We’re a little tentative at the plate. We’re hitting the ball well, but we can always hit better. We have enough good hitters that we should get more than 12 hits a game if we get hot.” The Aggies have at least seven hits in every game this season, getting 12 in the second game against UT- Pan American. Tyner also said the team should play better once it gets adjusted to facing different types of pitchers. Tyner is one player who has not had trouble getting adjusted. He is hitting a blistering .667 from the leadoff spot in the first three games. Although Johnson said the Aggies are not yet play ing up to their potential, the team is not at a disadvan tage with its competition. “We have to start doing some things better,” John son said. “We’re certainly not where we need to be, but not very many people are early in the season.” With a team batting average of .311 and a staff ERA of 2.16, the Aggies may be a little closer to their poten tial than the teams they face this early in the year. Today’s game will get underway at 2 p.m. No makeup date for the rainout against Lamar has been announced. MSC Barber Shop Serving All Aggies!
