Rodriguez was born in Culican,
Mexico, and relocated to East Los
Angeles as a young boy. He grew
up in Compton and attended
Dominguez High School. He re
ceived his associate arts degree
from Long Beach City College and
moved on to California State Uni
versity with the intent to become
an attorney.
Rodriguez worked behind the
scenes in a school production
where his jokes prompted his act
ing teacher to take him to a come
dy club for “Amateur Night.” The
club’s owner offered Rodriguez a
job working the door and the op
portunity for nightly stints on stage.
From there, Rodriguez began

“Often, students would go to the
counseling center with special reli
gious-oriented questions,” Yates
said. “The Student Counseling Cen
ter felt that it would be better to
have members of the clergy avail
able to answer those kinds of ques
tions.”
Yates said the people in the pro
gram listen to students with reli
gious concerns or problems.
“We determine if we can be of
help, and if we can’t, we refer the
student to the proper source,” he
said. “We are not there to convert
people, but to serve the communi
ty where it is. We abide by a code of
ethics that says we do not use any
underhanded or coercive methods
of counseling. We want to be of ser
vice to those with a spiritual strug
gle or any other problems."
