s The Battalion PORTS Tuesday • October 14, Maggert Continued from Page 7 In addition to his Ryder Cup suc cess, Maggert finished fourth at the ’97 U.S. Open and third at the PGA Championship. With those two fin ishes, Maggert joined Justin Leonard of Dallas as the only players in the world to finish in the top four in two major tournaments this year. Even with all of his success, Mag gert said life on the PGA Tour is not al ways enjoyable. “The travel is the hardest part of do ing what I do,” Maggert said. “I’m on the road literally thirty weeks a year. I have young kids, a six (Macy) and an eight-year-old (Matt). They travel with me some. But it’s a lot of lonely road trips and hotel rooms. “You can call ’em on the phone everyday but it’s just not the same as being around your family. When you’re on the road two or three weeks in a row, there’s a lot of times you go ‘what am I doing here, I’d rather be at home.’” The grueling schedule aside, Maggert said he has no regrets about his career. “I am hopeful that I can play on four or five more Ryder Cup Teams before my career is over,” Maggert said. “I’ve played two and been on the losing end of two, so I’m really looking forward to getting back on some more teams and seeing what the winning side is like.” Vitale Continued from Page 7 Vitale said another way to keep players from leav ing early would be for the NCAA to loan money to projected first round players. The players would then repay the money after they signed pro contracts. “Something has to be done. I would like to see for the great players, we should have a commit tee. Coaches, someone from the NCAA, someone from the NBA, so-called experts to designate who is a potential first round draft pick. It gives them the opportunity and the right to gototlit and say, ‘gentleman, I want to borrow$5[ could go to the NBA and sign right now! million, but I love college. I will payth; when I leave college.’ “Chris Webber told me years ago hf . Michigan, he didn’t want to leave there.l| one tells you they’ll give you $70 millionf how can you come back to Michigan? Do via IJH at good ol’ Uof M if he had torn his kneeupfP 4 ' say here’s your $70 million? It dosen’twcjf way. These are the superstars of our level, i give them the money. They earned it.” P GREAT DEALS EVERY TUESDAY IN THE BATTALION f M i »utt- jene CLIP& SAVE i comme Dice of thi Pledgee sr par, pe ledge for Exclusively Nails Treat Yourself to the Best!! ^ Hot Oil Manicures ^ Jacuzzi Spa Pedicures Artificial Extentions ^ Silk Wraps & Fiberglass Massage Therapy ^ Pampering Packages $10 off Full Sets $3 off Reg.
