Wine Continued from Page 3 The stomped grapes are not actu ally used, as Messina Hof imple ments their modern wine-making technology, but the process gives visitors a sense of wine-making in the Old World. The stomping is followed by a 1 wine tasting and a palate-pleasing 1 lunch in Messina Hof’s Trattoria I restaurant. Guests may then sam- 1 pie epicurean delights and the I vineyards’ specialties in a wine | and food-paring seminar. The § day’s festivities come to an end ■ with a romantic evening concert I in the rose garden. “A blanket, some cheese and fine I wine under the stars — this is the I good life,” Paul Bonarrigo said. The Harvest Weekends will con- f tinue through August 24. 0 Photograph: Brad Gran Lost Prophets debu breaks out of pop mol The Lost Prophets Circus Independent label j*** (out of five) By Rhonda Reinhart The Battalion T he great thing about young bands with debut albums is that they have nothing to lose. The Lost Prophets’ first album and inde pendent release, Circus, is a refreshing break from the over played and over-marketed sounds usually heard on FM radio. This band is still playing music just for the sake of play ing music. The Lost Prophets produced Circus completely on its own, and the band’s self-governance is evident in the music. The group's sound is still pure, still untouched by the hands of a record company marketing department, and listeners should enjoy it while they still can. Although some of the lyrics are a little immature, the music is intense, and the har monies are tight. For example, while lead singer David Gonzales croons about wanti ng to “stay right here in my room and watch cartoons” in “Better Get Along,” the rest of the group is creating music with the mature sound ofa band that has been playing together for many years. The tempo changes arecoi trolled, the melodies are caict and Gonzales has a fresh vo full of energy and emotion. Keyboardist Michael describes The Lost Prophets music as “a cross between and rock,” and that is probate the most appropriate wayto classify the band’s style While many of the songstn the album are undoubtedly pop tunes, The Lost Prophet: lias also i hi oun in a few trad that break the pop mold. “Struck With a Feeling” has loud rock feel, and it is defi nitely the rowdiest song on album. There is also a beauti fully-written ballad called “Midnight Lullaby." The most remarkable aspeci of Circus is the quartet’s to produce a 12-track albumiltf does not sound likeachainol similar-sounding songs. Thisia problem that plagues many young bands, but TheLotf Prophets has managed to evade the sound-alike syndrome and maintain an eclectic quality not, easily reproduced. Circus is a nice blend in more ways than one. The finemixof voices and choice of instrumen tation create a fresh-sounding album that should make The Lost Prophets a band to watch. avtl the! coml I nivnl and sionl ingsf IwliiJ :enoJ mar Thursday July 31 Kid Fantastic, a rock band from Bryan-College Station, is playing at Marooned Records at 3 p.m. The Marooned Summer Jam, with rock bands UFOFU from Denton, House of Large Sizes from Boulder, Colo., Kid Fantastic from Bryan-College Station and Lewis from Bryan-College Station, will be at Dixie Theatre at 9 p.m. Billy Pritchard, a singer and enter tainer, is playing at Chelsea Street Pub and Grill at 9 p.m. Ronnie Po, a rock band from Houston, is playing at Fitzwilly’s at 9 p.m. Friday August 1 Cory Morrow, a country band from Austin, is playing with Roger Creager at Bullwinkle’s at 9:30 p.m. Ruthie Foster and Full Circle, a rhythm and blues band from Bryan- College Station, is playing at 3rd Floor Cantina at 9 p.m. Pushmonkey, a rock band froit Austin, is performing with Spldi Monkey at Dixie Theater at 9 p, Will Taylor, an alternative must cian, is playing at Sweet Eugene House of Java at 9:00 p.m. Saturday August 2 The Hypnotist, from San Antonit will be casting spells at Caffe Cap' Comedy Corner at 7pm art 9:30pm.
