For more than 10 years he’s supplied a steady stream of generally mindless action flicks which are nonethe less a lot of fun to watch. With his new movie, Con Air, Bruckheimer doesn’t let audiences down, but he doesn’t surprise them, either. The formula behind Con Air is a no-brainer. A bunch of crimi nals are trying to escape a con fined space (an airplane) while duping the incompetent good guys (this time, instead of the Keystone Cops or the Keystone Swat Team, it’s the Keystone Drug Enforcement Agency). As coinci dence would have it, the one man on the plane who can foil their plan, Cameron Poe (Nicholas Cage), is a highly-trained Army Ranger with a checkered past. Of course, he is distrusted by every one in the Keystone D.E.A. except for one idealistic young agent (John Cusack). The two gain a grudging respect for each other as they whack out the bad guys. Of course, as action flicks go, this is a fine film, and a far sight better than The Rock (at least none of the villains says “My God, what Con Air Starring Nicholas Cage, John Malkovich Directed by Simon West Rated R Playing at Hollywood 16 have I done?”). Jolin Malkovich is as entertaining as ever, delivering another of his cold-blooded, yet generally likeable villains in the form of Cyrus the Virus (who hap pily informs us that he was found “crazy” in his last psychological profile). The rest of the supporting cast is inspired: Garland Greene (Steve Buscemi) is a serial killer along for the ride in full Hannibal Lechter-type restraints; Ving Rhames is Diamond Dog, a mili tant mass murderer who plans to overthrow Cyrus as soon as the plane touches down; and Danny Trejo is “Johnny 23,” so named for his 23 rape convictions (he soon wishes to change his name to “Johnny 24”). The weak link in this movie is Cage’s performance. He sleep walks through his surprisingly unfunny role, drawing on those Oscar-winning abilities to look and act exactly like Rambo. Cage also seems to have lost the flair for accents he displayed in Raising Arizona. As the Alabama-born ids Poe, Cage delivers his few lines with an accent that only exists in the movies — a mixture of bad John Wayne and Elvis imperson ations. When he’s not delivering miserable one-liners, he’s giving lot of icy stares, and while he’s very good at staring, we’d rather get on with the rest of the movie, Con Airis a good-looking movie. Simon West, a veteran of the music video industry, brings with him a flashy visual style and a couple of subtle nods to Oliver U Stone. The action sequences and * special effects are as spectacular and thrilling as audiences have r M come to expect from ! Bruckheimer’s movies. L ] We are also treated to the usual J l| slate of action movie cliches (cops eating doughnuts, bodies landing on cars, good guys from the Special Forces showing off their deadly skills in a bar room brawl), 51 c but most are executed with origi nality and comic self-satire. Bruckheimer knows these cliches better than anyone because they 1 ^ are his stock-in-trade. Back in the ’80s, of course, he was one of the people inventing the cliches. They have served him well. After all, a cliche becomes a cliche because it works. Con Airis another in a long line of good action flicks that won’t leave its viewers thinking, but will give them what they pay for. nlitl :ali ;chl History Continued From Page 3 “It sounds like something I might have followed, but it isn’t,” he said. “I didn’t resolve to be a lot of the things I am. I stumbled into most of them.” Wakefield said Vandiver has always had an interest in leaders. “He has written about leaders, and he has been a leader,” she said. “I think that is the common thread.” She said there are some parallels between being president of a university of this size and being a mili tary commander. Joseph Dawson, a history professor at A&M, has known and respected Vandiver for 20 years. “Dr. Vandiver is a very cordial person,” Dawson said. “He is very willing to listen to graduate students and younger faculty. He is also very willing to give advice. He is the kind of person who is a pleasure to know.” Dawson said the most valuable aspect of Vandiver’s influence is that he is a model historian, ^ ^ He has written about lead-1 ers, and he has been a leader.” Edith Anderson Wakefield Research assistant which includes scholarship and public speaking. “Having someone like that to talk to at times has been helpful,” Dawson said. Wakefield said that she feels happy to have worked with Vandiver. “Working for Dr. Vandiver has been a high point in my working experience,” she said. “I hope to work with him again. I think that says it all.” Vandiver said he feels lucky to have accom plished so much. “I can’t believe it all happened,” he said. “As the old saying goes, I’d rather be lucky than smart any day."
