Page 9 Wednesday • April 16, 1997 QB Stewart granted extra year of eligibility Staff and Wire Report Texas A&M quarterback Branndon Stewart was granted an extra year of eligibility Tuesday. Stewart, who transferred to A&M January 1995 from the University of Tennessee, was forced to give up a year of eligibility in compliance with NCAA regulations. National letters of Stewart intent are for a full year, and since he did not fulfill that requirement, he basi cally forfeited two years. Stewart and his family peti tioned the national letter of intent steering committee of the Collegiate Commissioners Association, and now he will be listed as a junior for the 1997 football season. “I’m excited about getting another year of eligibility back,” Stewart said. “I felt like my career had been cut short losing that extra year when I trans ferred. This gives me a chance to further my development.” A&M Head Coach R.C. Slocum said he was happy with the ruling. “In light of the NCAA look ing out for the welfare of the student-athlete, I feel the rul ing is very appropriate. The extra year allows him to devel op his abilities.” Stewart started all 12 Aggie games last season. He completed 146 of 299 passes for 1,904 yards and nine touchdowns. He threw for seven interceptions. del Angel Continued from Page 7 “It (controlling his emotions) saves you a lot of shots throughout a round of golf,” del Angel said. “I’ve learned as I’ve grown through the years here at A&M that it doesn’t really matter how you hit it, it’s just the way to think your way around the golf course and the way you handle yourself under certain condi tions. It’s just part of the learn ing process.” The learning process for del Angel included being able to handle his success and bur geoning talents, a seemingly abstract concept Ellis tried to simplify. “Miguel’s always been a little bit afraid,” Ellis said. “I think a little afraid of success, and afraid of his own abilities to give him success. But he has made some real mental commitments. He’s not afraid to get into some tough situations because he knows he has the ability to get out of them.” Lately, the team has been putting itself in fewer and fewer tough situations, as evidenced by their recent national ranking and favorite status for the impending Big 12 Tournament. “I’m very excited,” del Angel said. “We have a very good team and we’re finally pulling it all together. All of us individually are so talented, and these past few tournaments we’ve really come into our own. We’ve started com peting better as a team. I’m looking forward to going up and playing in the first Big 12 Tournament.” LEARN TO FLY NOW At United Flight Systems THE EXPERIENCED FLIGHT SCHOOL Learn to fly with the Cessna Pilot Center Exclusive Integrated Flight Training System P kl Cessna Our New Location: College Station Easterwood Airport 409 260-6322 ■ Private thru advanced training ■ Aircraft rental ■ Pilot Shop ■ F.A.A. approved 141 school ■ VA eligible Benefits & THE YOGA INSTITUTE AND BOOKSTORES EST.1974 725 E. Becker Continued from Page 7 “I knew Isabelle too, because she is from Sweden,” Becker said. “She (Rosberg) told me a lot of good things about the school. She really helped me a lot.” For the Lady Aggies, Becker has proved she can play with the Americans. She is third on the team with a 79.33 average and ranked 14th in the Big 12. Rosberg said Becker faced many changes when she first arrived in Aggieland, but she has adjusted well. “She’s mostly practiced alone before, and at first, it’s an adjust ment to practice with your team mates,” Rosberg said. Rosberg said she and Becker rely on each other both on and off the golf course. “Anna supports me in many things, too,” Rosberg said. “We get together, especially on the weekends, and cook Swedish food From looking at her record, Hullett appears to be right on track for heading into the LPGA circuit. As a freshman, Hullett tied for first place at the Southwest Conference Championships, was named to the 1994-95 A1I-SWC Tournament Team and was a Rolex All- American third-team pick. Sutherland said Hullett is the type of player other people admire because of her dedication to the sport. “Jamie is not a vocal leader, but her modesty and attitude say a lot to her teammates,” Sutherland said. “She always does the right thing, and I think everyone looks up to her.” and hang out the way we do at home. It’s a great comfort when you’re so far away from home.” Although Rosberg commends Becker on playing well for A&M, Rosberg said she has not quite played up to her ability. “The scores that she shot in Sweden and all of the champi onship titles that she has with the Swedish national team show that she is a high-caliber player,” Rosberg said. “I think she will come through at any time now and play the way she is capable of.” Sutherland said she is confi dent in Becker’s game, and that next year Becker will come back even stronger. “Anna’s learned a lot, but I think her biggest asset is her maturity and her attitude,” Sutherland said. “She is incredi bly mature and is probably one of the most mature freshmen I have coached, and that has helped her so much.” Warning: this book may contain graphic content. t h e 1998 AGGIELAND is accepting applications for GRAPHIC DESIGNERS Applications are available in the Aggieland Office Room 004, Reed McDonald L 20 TO 50% OFF ALL INSTOCK BRIDALS • FORMALS AND BRIDAL VEILS E ADIES & TORfos e>*j “Bridal & Tuxedo ” At The Texas Avenue Entrance of A&M Open Weeknights Until 7 P.M. 013 Reed McDonald Building • Telephone (409) 845-3313 • FAX (409) 845-264' Staff Application (Due Friday by 4:00) □ Summer □ Fall Name: Phone Number(s): Major: Classification: Number of hours you will take: Expected graduation (semester): If you have another job, what is it?
