Pagel Tuesday • April 8,1Si Clinton and Netanyahu search for Middle East peace solution WASHINGTON (AP) — President Clin ton sought today to build a bridge between Israelis and Palestinians, but U.S. officials cautioned that his meeting with Prime Min ister Benjamin Netanyahu may produce no “magic wand” for Middle East peace. “We had a very specific, frank, candid and long talk and now we're going to talk to Palestinians and see what we can do to get this thing going again,” Clinton said after the White House meeting. The president refused to provide details of their discussions, but he promised “we’ll do our very best” to salvage the peace process. “I need to not say too much about it and work very hard on it,” he said. Before the meeting, Clinton reiterated his call for Palestinian leaders to declare “zero- tolerance” for terrorism and said Israel should not have to make concessions for it. “Freedom from terrorism is something no one should have to purchase,” Clinton said. Netanyahu, accusing Palestinian leaders of “an almost zero effort” to stop terrorists from murdering Jewish civilians, said Israel would not make concessions to get Yasser Arafat to comply with his obligations. “If they want peace, they must fight ter rorism,” the prime minister told an enthu siastic gathering of thousands of Christians and Jews who held their fourth annual uni ty conference in support of Israel. Speaking also just hours before the White House meeting, presidential spokesman Mike McCurry said, “It is a mo ment in which the peace process needs new ideas and hard work and the presiden prepared to deliver.” The diplomatic task facing Clinton Netanyahu could prove difficult: Isra* and Palestinians are maintaining harl 4* stances over a Jewish housing develop® in Jerusalem that prompted Palestinian olence and a sidetracking of schedm peace talks.
