Fire does not delay food
preparation in Sbisa
A fire in a Sbisa kitchen filled the building
with smoke Thursday night, and prompted the
evacuation of all students and food service em
ployees in the dining center, the Underground
and Bernie’s Place.
A heating strip on a freezer door malfunc
tioned and caught the door on fire. The strip
normally prevents the door from freezing to the
frame. The fire was contained to the door,
which was the only damage.
Ron Beard, director of Food Services, said
all the food had to be removed from the freez
er, but none of it was ruined.
Two exhaust fans were placed at the dining
center doors to help remove smoke. Beard
said the kitchen would need a thorough clean
ing to remove soot, before it could be used to
prepare food on Friday.

Monkeys join DNA cloning
circle in embryonic form ‘
BEAVERTON, Ore. (AP) — Researchers have pm ^
duced two monkeys with a procedure similartothat m
used to clone a sheep in Scotland, a development
expected to help research in AIDS, alcoholism,de
pression and other illnesses.
The cloning of the rbesus monkey is lessdra-J
matic than the cloning of the sheep because prim
itive embryos, rather than adult animals, were dir,
plicated. But it marks the first time it has been usedjl
to reproduce animals so closely akin to humans.
“Everyone is really excited about the poten-i
tial of this and I think it’s going to make for much,!
much better science, and much better experi-H
ments,” said M. Susan Smith, director of tlieii
Oregon Regional Primate Research Center,j
where research the was conducted.
