The success of the program depends on student involvement in the program, he said. Students interested in helping with the program can call the Student Government office at 845-3051. The first fleet of thirty-five to fifty bicycles will be available around March 16. Burton said he hopes the pro gram brings convenient transporta tion to the students. “I want it (Borrow-a-Bike) to be a success,” he said. “I want to help the students out.” The bill passed unanimously. Replant Continued from Page 1 Strike Continued from Page 1 Loomis said to offset the 7,000 to 8,000 trees cut for the 1995 Bonfire, Replant participants planted nearly double that number last spring. He said the number of trees planted is not necessarily the num ber of trees that will ultimately replace those cut down. “Not every tree survives that is potted,” Loomis said. “(Since 1990], the total survival rate has been 40 percent.” Because of a drought last summer, 1,500 potted seedlings re mained from an original 10,000. Therefore, 1,000 fewer students were needed to participate this year because there were fewer trees to plant, Loomis said. The Replant organization has tried to remedy the low survival rate. Loomis said these efforts include using larger pots, allowing the potted plants to grow for 2 or 3 years rather than just one, plac ing bark mulch around the seedlings and adding root stimulator to the potted plant. Replant this year will be near Lake Somerville at an old Clayton Williams oil well that exploded in 1985, killing the surrounding vege tation. Trees planted Saturday will include saw-toothed oak, live oak, bald cypress and green ash among others, Loomis said. “ [ We want to] revegetate the area and help the forest reclaim the land,” Loomis said. Students Continued from Page 1 Nickel said many of the students think A&M is only made up of foot-y ball players and sports figures.— “We want to encourage acade mics and make them see the whole picture,” she said. “That is the rea son we scheduled the tour.” Nickel said she worried at first that the children might not un derstand the student govern ment processes she and Dewald were teaching. But her worries were put to rest soon after she began working with the children. “The children are amazing,” she said. “They are so much more mature than I was at that age. This student council has become their life. They actually look forward to their Friday meetings.” Scott Musser,- the vice presi dent and a fourth-grader at Peb ble Creek, said the student coun cil held a canned food and toy drive for charity. “Those were really fun,” he said. “Plus we had a Realtor’s Day, where we served cake and took people on tours of the school, so the realtors could tell people moving into the area about Peb ble Creek.” Dewald said all the children wanted to get involved in giving great are al- nev- back to the community. “These kids have hearts,” she said. "They ways looking outward: th er look inward. “When all these kids got up and presented their speeches during elections, they talked about helping other students. They talked about making Pebble Creek a better school,” Dewald said. “These kids actually understand that being a good leader means being willing to help others.” Musser said he wanted to make things better for his classmates. “I wanted to be on student coun cil so I can help make Pebble Creek the best it could be," he said.
