Being deputy chancellor is an in
teresting experience, Sayavedra said.
“This job is so diverse
and complex, you never
know what’s going to
happen,” he said.
Terri Parker, director
of communications for
the A&M System, works
with Sayavedra on a dai
ly basis. “Genuine” is a
word she uses to de
scribe him.
“[Sayavedra] is a top-
notch individual,” Parker
said. “He gives everybody the same
attention and he works well with in
dividuals at all levels.”
Making friends, Parker said, is
one of the deputy chancellor’s pri
orities.
“Dr. Sayavedra is always there to
lend an ear,” Parker said. “He culti
vates relationships not only profes
sionally but personally as well.”
Sayavedra said to be successful in
life, one should remained focused.
“You’re only as good as the peo
ple you work with,”
Sayavedra said. “One
should never compromise
his or her integrity. And, by
all means, protect your
dignity.
“Whenever you do
something, do it to the best
of your ability.”
As for school, Sayavedra
said students need to have
a desire to succeed.
“You don’t always have
to make As, but you have to be
committed,” Sayavedra said. “Peo
ple . . . don’t always have to know
what you want but when you get it,
you need to know it.”
Sayavedra said he is grateful for
his success in life.
“I have been a very fortunate
individual,” he said.

A survey of cattle producers
said the Texas cattle industry los
es $67 million annually because of
fire ant damage.
Frisbee said fire ants are attract
ed to electrical transformers.
Bobby Singletary, an engineering
supervisor at Bryan utilities, said fire
ants build up mounds in electrical
transformers and can cause a short if
the live parts are exposed.
“We’ve opened up the lid of a
transformer and its packed com
pletely full of ants,” Singletary said.
“The utility companies have to
keep repairing the damage fire
ants cause,” Frisbee said.
Singletary said electrical short
cuts from fire ant damage rarely oc
cur though.
“They’re just a pain, basically,”
he said.
