D The Battalion r, li ti I LI i li %j Th Pi Monday • November2: J State Holiday kick off gets left out in the cold DALLAS (AP) — A two-fisted blast of arctic air smacked Texas Sunday with freezing temperatures in the Panhandle, a blanket of snow from San Angelo to the Red River and rain that triggered flash- flood warnings in North Texas. In Dallas-Fort Worth, it was so cold and wet that Six Flags Over Texas canceled its Holiday in the Park event. “The weather is so miserable, there will be no Christmas today,” a spokesman said. Cold-weather workers braced for the worst. Heating repair com panies reported a flurry of calls, and road crews loaded sand trucks in case highway bridges and overpasses need de-icing. By today, North Texans could wake up to below-freezing temper atures and up to three inches of snow. The forecast called for mostly cloudy skies, a slight chance of snow flurries and a high of 40 degrees in Dallas. Rain was also expected to mix with sleet for slippery driving conditions. Prison officials buy vacant Wal-Mart ► This day in history HOUSTON (AP) — In the eyes of state prison officials, a va cant Wal-Mart store looked like a bargain. The Texas Department of Criminal Justice was looking for extra office space in Huntsville. So they looked around and stopped when they came upon the empty Wal-Mart store. Now the Texas Department of Criminal Justice is paying $40,000 a month in rent retroactive to Sept. 1. And the agency has also lost its ability to recoup almost all the money spent on the still-incomplete renovation project. The building is being converted to office space for personnel and health service employees of TDCJ. Although the project is incom plete, TDCJ moved 85 employees into the building Nov. 15 and is scheduled to move in 125 more this week. Another 110 employees are scheduled to move in January.
