According to new figures from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, 39,781 inmates — or more than 30 percent of the population of 131,316 — call themselves Baptist. The only other category in the double digits is Catholic, topping 18 percent of Texas prisoners. A whopping 22 percent are catego rized as “unknown,” representing inmates who didn’t say or didn’t care when asked for their religious denomination. The rest of the inmates are divid ed among the categories of Christian Church, Methodist, Church of Christi, Pentecostal, Muslim, Protes tant, Jewish, non-denominational, no religious preference and other. Information gathered on in mates’ religion is used in the Crimi nal Justice Department’s religion programs to provide prisoners with appropriate services, said Jerry Groom, director of chaplains and an Assemblies of God minister. The relatively large number of Baptists simply reflects the overall population in Texas, he added. A number of prisoners may not ac tually have a church affiliation, ank. “This a.
