“No organization will ever get
better until the leadership is will
ing to admit something is broken,”
Schwarzkopf said. “Zero defects is
the stupidest motto anyone can
adopt if you are in the business of
leading people.”
Schwarzkopf compared his ex
periences in Vietnam and the Per
sian Gulf War to explain this part of
the “leadership formula.”
During Vietnam the Army was a
“can-do” Army, Schwarzkopf said.
Anything that was asked of the sol
diers in Vietnam, the answer was
always “Can do, sir.”
After the Vietnam War,
Schwarzkopf said,
the Army realized
it had to change its
way of conducting
business and start
recognizing what
was “broken.”
This attitude
was in place by the
time Desert Storm

Setting standards in an organi
zation, he said, is also a key part of
the "leadership formula.”
“It’s this thing called letting
people understand what is expect

order to succeed, they must know
what the measure of success is.”
The final part of the "leadeil

Recognizing an organization’s

voicing their opinions.
Establishing goals within the

of Schwarzkopf’s “leadership
