Anything that was asked of the sol diers in Vietnam, the answer was always “Can do, sir.” After the Vietnam War, Schwarzkopf said, the Army realized it had to change its way of conducting business and start recognizing what was “broken.” This attitude was in place by the time Desert Storm began, he said. “Leadership fi nally got around to understanding you’ll never get better unless you admit defects,” Schwarzkopf said. was: "Kick Iraq out of Kuwait.” Setting standards in an organi zation, he said, is also a key part of the "leadership formula.” “It’s this thing called letting people understand what is expect ed of them,” Schwarzkopf said. “In order to succeed, they must know what the measure of success is.” The final part of the "leadeil ship formula,” he said, is estab lishing a latitude to learn withk the organization. “No organization will ever get better until the leadership is willing to admit something is broken.” Norman Schwarzkopf Retired Army General Recognizing an organization’s problems, he said, involves mak ing members feel comfortable voicing their opinions.
