Armstrong, 25, said he had a malignant tumor on a testicle and had it removed on Oct. 3, a day af ter it was discovered. He made the comments in a teleconference call from Austin, Texas to an nounce his withdrawal from the world championships which start this week in Lugano, Switzerland. Armstrong won the world cham pionship in 1993 and took sixth in the time trial and 12th in the road race at the Atlantic Olympics.
