Fine acting, great promotion al trailers and, of course, the name John Grisham all drive A Time to Kill. But overall the film lacks drive. In a two-and-a-half hour movie, only the first and last 30 minutes really command the au dience’s attention. All the stuff in between is simply a slow climb to the climax, sparsely spattered with Grisham’s trade mark wit and creative use of le gal loopholes. In the emotionally gripping opening scene, a pair of redneck thugs rape and attempt to hang a ten-year-old girl while on a drunken tear through a small Mississippi town. The girl’s fa ther, Carl Lee Hailey (Samuel L. Jackson), knows that white men tend to get acquitted in court when a race crime is involved, so he personally takes on the role of judge, jury and executioner. Hailey shoots down the two men on the courthouse steps and is arrested for capital murder. Roaches dominate, steal show in Joe’s Apartment By Jeffrey Cranor The Battalion MoVlE&EViEW \ Joe’s Apartment r ,.~ Starring Jerry O’Connell and Megan Directed by John Payson Rat*sfl PD^3 ' ■MM * Cent of five) Cockroaches are cute in their own repulsive little ways. That is, only if they can sing, talk and save lives. MTV’s first movie, Joe’s Apart ment, is a successful venture where the roaches dominate the refrigerator, the bathroom and the movie screen. Joe (Jerry O’Connell) is a new arrival to the Big Apple, and life is hard. He has no home, job or money. But a sudden opening in a dilapidated apartment build ing becomes Joe’s pad at an af fordable $100 a month. The two landlords, Vlad (Shiek Mahmud-Bey) and Jesus (Jim Sterling), make times tough for the small-town boy, though. Their boss, Mr. Bianco (Don Ho), wants the building and its residents destroyed to make room for a multi-story state prison. Joe manages to stay alive with the help of Ralph and Rodney and about 30,000 newfound roach friends. Much to Joe’s sur prise, the bugs talk, sing and love slovenly bachelors. The roaches, however, do not please Joe much. They are ways around making Joe’s hunt and love lifts somewhat difficult. Lily (Megat Ward), an optimistiiS gardener who want to create a publii garden in the Eas'i Village, is the cente of Joe’s attention. Joe spends his til® pining away for thi most beautiful girl it the city, Lily, onlyk have the roaches repel her. The little critters also haves negative impact on Joe’s career He cannot hold a job as a pizz£ man or a copy-store clerk becausfj of the insects constant presence. Joe’s Apartment is surprising ly funny. What seems to be» pointless, inane B-movie on thf surface actually turns out to be a pointless, inane B-movie, b® in a good way. The roaches and their four or five song-and-dance nun hers are a riot. The New York crime jokes are abundant an(i extremely comic. And while bathroom-level humor seeps into the writing quite often, the movie still manages to make the audience laugh despite their grimacing. Although Joe’s Apartmenl does not compete with larger, more profound films, O’Connell portrays an innocent and con vincing Joe in his first ever fea ture film; and Ward, who has several B-movie roles under her belt, is sweet. The roaches, of course, are adorable. Don’t Worry when an accident or sudden illness occurs CarePlus is open when you need them 7 days a week with affordable medical care.
